Where is God in all this? This article is written to answer the question: Is God bad?
GOD - Benevolent or Malevolent ?
Some of my friends, neighbours or colleagues at work might say that there is no God, yet when the chips are down, and something terrible occurs in their own lives or in the news, they clearly have a view of God. For many, He is seen as the author of all sickness, disaster, tragedy and the like. God is readily blamed for things that are going wrong in their lives. People can be quick to judge Him, yet slow to thank God for His blessings. He is seen by some as something of a malevolent God, rather than the truth that He is utterly benevolent in nature and character.
This false view of God comes because they are unable to believe that there is a devil…Satan…who is indeed malevolent in character, and stands in opposition to God. We shall see how this being is nevertheless used by God to give mankind the gift of choice.
THE MAJESTY OF GOD'S CREATION!
This malevolent personality at work in our world today existed from before the birth of mankind. The one behind the corruption, disease, sickness and rebellion against authority so prevalent in society is a being once called ‘Lucifer’ – the ‘Shining One’. In heaven, he was originally the principal leader of the worship due towards God, and highly exalted in the heavenly realms. (Worship is derived from ‘worth-ship’. Almighty God is worthy of our worship. Worship saves us from self-absorption.)
The Devil’s primary weapon wielded against the crown of God’s creation – mankind – is deception. He is insanely jealous of mankind, and his intention is to take as many people as possible with him to the final destination of all those who rebel against the authority and love of God Almighty, Creator of the heavens and the earth. The Bible speaks of Lucifer:
The Bible: the Book of Isaiah chapter 14, verses 12-15
12 How you have fallen from heaven, O morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth....13 You said in your heart, "I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of the sacred mountain. 14 I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High." 15 But you are brought down to the grave, to the depths of the pit.
It was pride which came before the fall of Lucifer:
The Bible: the Book of Ezekiel 28:11-19
11 The word of the Lord came to me: 12 "Son of man, take up a lament concerning the king of Tyre and say to him: 'This is what the Sovereign Lord says:
" 'You were the model of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. 13 You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone adorned you: ruby, topaz and emerald, chrysolite, onyx and jasper, sapphire, turquoise and beryl. Your settings and mountings were made of gold; on the day you were created they were prepared.
14 You were anointed as a guardian cherub, for so I ordained you. You were on the holy mount of God; you walked among the fiery stones. 15 You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created till wickedness was found in you. 16 Through your widespread trade you were filled with violence, and you sinned. So I drove you in disgrace from the mount of God, and I expelled you, O guardian cherub, from among the fiery stones.
17 Your heart became proud on account of your beauty, and you corrupted your wisdom because of your splendour. So I threw you to the earth; I made a spectacle of you before kings. 18 By your many sins and dishonest trade you have desecrated your sanctuaries.
So I made a fire come out from you, and it consumed you, and I reduced you to ashes on the ground in the sight of all who were watching. 19 All the nations who knew you are appalled at you; you have come to a horrible end and will be no more.' "
After being cast out from the presence of God in the heavenly realms, down to the jewel of creation – the earth, Lucifer’s name was changed to ‘Satan’, sometimes described as ‘the Devil’. He also took with him an angelic host who took sides with him in the rebellion.
SYMBOL OF THE DEMONIC
SYMBOL OF THE DEMONIC
Satan employs this strategy of exercising pride – exalting an independence of spirit and self-centredness – to appeal to the pinnacle of creation, Mankind, in order that we also choose to rebel against God, and act with independence of spirit. According to the legalities of Heaven, he then has a right to claim us for his own, that we may be taken with him to his final destination at the Final Judgment of all things, because God is just.
However, God is also merciful and full of love towards us. He is all-knowing, and knew Lucifer’s rebellion would come, and had a plan....we’ll come to that later. Firstly though, how did Satan gain a foothold into the thinking of man? To answer this, we must go back to the beginning.
The tri-une personalities of God, totally integrated and in total unity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, has always been and always will be. He is beyond our conception, beyond time, and utterly beyond comprehension. There is no jealousy in the Godhead.....He is perfect.
When mankind appears on the scene, the earth has been created as a perfect environment for man. The heavenly realms and the angelic orders of creation already exist.
The Bible: the Book of Genesis 1:26-28
26 Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground."27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. 28 God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground."
The intention for mankind, by the love and benevolence of the Creator, God, was to enjoy a relationship with God, and enjoy His creation, serving Him in love. God was pleased to create Man....,a being unlike other created beings on earth in that Mankind has the capacity to know and relate to God. God pours out His love on Man.
7 the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.
8 Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. 9 And the Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
10 A river watering the garden flowed from Eden; from there it was separated into four headwaters. 11 The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold. 12 (The gold of that land is good; aromatic resin and onyx are also there.) 13 The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush. 14 The name of the third river is the Tigris; it runs along the east side of Asshur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.
15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, "You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die."
18 The Lord God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him." 19 Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found. 21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs and closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. 23 The man said, "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called 'woman', for she was taken out of man."
24 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh. 25 The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.
THE CROWN OF GOD'S CREATION
So God creates both male and female, man and woman, with purpose and destiny. There is no death. Life is all about knowing God....this is the meaning of ‘eternal life’, a relationship with God. Mankind is content and at peace, enjoying God and enjoying one another and all their surroundings. There is creative and fulfilling work to do.
Remember, though, that Satan has been cast to the earth, taking the form of a serpent, and by his presence in Eden becoming a test for mankind. The opportunity to choose right or wrong was now presented to Adam and Eve through Satan, and allowed by God in His wisdom. Satan used his principal strategy....lies and deception....sown into the mind of man. He still operates very successfully this way! This is a key bible passage:
Genesis 3:1-15 The Fall of Man
1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God really say, 'You must not eat from any tree in the garden'?" 2 The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, 'You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.' "
4 "You will not surely die," the serpent said to the woman. 5 "For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." 6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realised that they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.
8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the Lord God called to the man, "Where are you?" 10 He answered, "I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid." 11 And he said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree from which I commanded you not to eat?" 12 The man said, "The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it." 13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, "What is this you have done?" The woman said, "The serpent deceived me, and I ate." 14 So the Lord God said to the serpent, "Because you have done this,
"Cursed are you above all the livestock and all the wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life. 15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel."
So, Satan appears to have won! Man has now rebelled against God’s loving instructions. The judgment on this is separation from God. Mankind will now experience a lack of communion with God, and the consequence of sin will be death rather than eternal life, as it was before. Paradise has been lost.
The relationship we were designed to have with God comes to an end. Sin (rebellion against God) has come into the world. Though Satan lied and deceived, playing on Eve’s emotions, it was Adam who deliberately chose to gain forbidden knowledge, and as such, becomes the bearer of greater responsibility over Eve for the fall of man.
Mankind is cast out of the lush paradise of Eden – rather like the way Lucifer was cast out of heaven - and is now no longer at peace with God, no longer fulfilled, and prone to malevolent thoughts and actions.
In the courts of heaven, man is legally ensnared to Satan and his destiny. Mankind now bears the mark of rebellion and independence of spirit in the very core of our beings. Every human being born from that time inherits that core rebellion. We are marked.
However, the good news is that none of this took God by surprise. He wouldn’t be God if it did! Remember, He has a plan. Paradise will be regained for those who trust God.
Though mankind is inherently aware of God, and something of His standards are written upon us, many choose to worship idols or the devil….still practiced in many forms. Some though, reach out to God and worship Him…though from a distance. Man begins to learn that we can have a relationship with God, but that it is not as it should be. Some begin to look forward to One who will rescue us from ourselves, enabling us to know God.
Now at this point, let’s be clear at what the Bible paints as the timescale of man’s existence. God cannot lie. The Bible records give the age of Creation as roughly 6000 years. There is amazing scientific corroboration found on www.drdino.com of the age of the earth and all creation. Stars and the earth agree…if only you can get past the ‘billions of years ago’ lie established in the minds of our young children at school, by the massive evolution brigade.
The above website is hated because the most eminent scientists and professors cannot refute the man who is both a scientist and a teacher! He takes on all comers in debate and presentation. (I believe God has raised up this man ‘for such a time as this’.) Just who says that the world is billions of years old? Who says man evolved from the ‘primordial soup’ some 4.5 million years ago? Were you there? Were they there? From Adam, there is a continuous record of man’s existence and the generations of man.
Also, according to the Bible, God’s account of Man, written by several authors, each inspired and enabled by God, the earth was spoken into being before the sun, moon and stars. This is the opposite of atheistic scientific thought! Yet, when examined scientifically but from a creationist viewpoint, and combined with faith in God, it all begins to make sense. Add to this the Bible accounts of the cataclysmic effects of the Flood some 1600 years later and the parts of the jigsaw of creation and the age of the earth fit together. Have a look at the creation lectures on that website! www.drdino.com
As King David the psalmist puts it, when looking up at the clear night sky in Israel:
The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. (Psalm 19:1-2)
THE GLORY OF GOD!
THE GLORY OF GOD!
At this point, I will include a few thoughts from Dr Dino's site mentioned above:
Evolution is a belief system. Take school science lessons for instance. In many school textbooks, (teacher’s edition), teachers are encouraged to stress that the earth is billions of years old, and to make sure the children believe this.
In science lessons, we should be teaching science...things that can be demonstrated and tested, e.g. the first law of thermodynamics, which declares that, ‘Matter’ (and / or energy) ‘cannot be created nor destroyed.’
How did the world get here, then? There are two choices, either somebody made the world [as Bible says, ‘In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.’ Genesis 1v1], or the world made itself. From the Humanist Manifesto 1, 1933 Tenent # 1: ‘Humanists regard the Universe as self-existing and not created.’ [Note that the use of a capital letter for ‘Universe’ effectively dei-fies the universe. Humanism is a religion!]
So, the question is, how did it get here? Hence the development of the Big Bang Theory, to explain the existence of the universe. A typical text book called, ‘The Origin of the Universe’ states: ‘Most astronomers believe that about 18-20 billion years ago all the matter in the Universe was concentrated into one very dense, very hot region that may have been smaller than a period (dot) on this page.....’ The text goes on to say that it is a cyclic, periodic event happening every 80-100 billion years. [Wow, that takes some believing, that all the matter in the universe was condensed into one tiny and super heavy dot! And who was there 80 billion years ago?]
‘For some unknown reason, this region exploded. Physicists theorise that from the state of nothingness, the universe began in a gigantic explosion about 16.5 billion years ago.’
[Interesting, something from nothing. This is just what we Christians believe, that God created the universe from nothing! It is also interesting to discover that the word ‘universe’ comes from two Latin words: ‘uni’ = single, and ‘verse’ = spoken sentence. We live in a universe…..a single spoken sentence. Compare this with the Bible account in Genesis 1v3: ’And God said, Let there be…...’]
The creation videos total 17 hours viewing, and go on to scientifically explain and account for the universe being as it is, the galaxies, their rotations, the solar system and planets – amazing! Everything fits. No wonder this creationist is so unpopular!
From the fall of Adam, sickness ,disease, wickedness and evil from the heart, all began to manifest. Adam lives to be around 900 years old. (Before the Flood, there was a very different climate throughout the earth, with a canopy of water vapour high above and encircling the earth to render a perfect environment, sustained by God). Adam had ‘many’ sons and daughters. Since the Law had not yet been given, and there was no deformity of man, the children intermarried and the population rose, each person living a little less time each generation. This was because of the ravaging effects of sin. Mankind is aware of God’s existence, but many choose to shake a fist in His face, while some choose to seek Him out. The same is true today.
Satan believes he has mankind in his hand. Wickedness in man abounds and multiplies until the perversions of man’s heart become intolerable.
God warns mankind to repent, by turning to Him, to change their ways, through the preaching of one man named Noah. Around 2400 BC Noah preached for 100 years this message, for in His mercy and compassion, God longed for man to choose to turn away from evil thoughts and actions and turn to Him. Meanwhile, Noah and family was directed to build a colossal boat – the Ark – similar in size to ‘Titanic’, using a particular type of wood and bonding, and mechanisms to allow for pitch and roll. This rescue vessel only had to float. All who would believe Noah’s preaching – a pitifully small number - and also the male and female representatives of the creatures of the earth, finally entered the Ark. Those creatures of the sea did not need an ark!
The mockers scoffed, until the floodwaters came upon the earth from amidst the earth layers, and from the canopy around the earth, which was destroyed.
All died, except the believers of Noah’s warnings. In the Bible, the Book of Genesis, chapter 6, gives the account of this. ‘The Flood’, which appears in the legends and artwork of 35 ancient civilizations, does untold damage to the earth, eroding in a very short time what we are told took millions of years! These theories of the earth’s formation exist simply because otherwise people would have to admit that there is a God of order and design behind the formation of the universe. Man’s independence of spirit does not wish this to be admitted, so deception takes over – the Big Lie of ‘Evolution’.
Now, without the canopy around the earth, the climate changes. Climate change begins to affect the earth, and variations emerge, heralding deserts and ice caps, as well as more temperate climates. The population of dinosaurs is decimated, the rest probably hunted by man. Once again, the world begins to be re-populated, languages and nations emerge. Now both the effects of sin, and climate change take their toll on the age of man, which begins to reduce, until the average age of a lifetime becomes 120 years. Later on, this reduces to what we have now. But the root problem of rebellion against God persists. Satan seeks every opportunity to deceive and rob mankind of his destiny and purpose, peace and fulfillment. Yet the inherent knowledge of God persists.
One man, Abraham, is singled out to receive a revelation of who God is, and trusts God deeply. From him, over time, a new nation emerges, and one man from that nation – Moses - becomes their deliverer from the bondage of being slaves to Egypt.
As God fashions a nation for Himself out of all the nations from these Hebrew slaves, He reveals His standards for all mankind through Moses, who dramatically receives the 10 Commandments and other associated laws of life at Mount Sinai.
These moral laws have penetrated society even to this day.
This nation of Israel becomes acquainted with the character and requirements of God, and through Israel, the known world receives God’s standards. Ancient stories of a ‘Deliverer’ from a moral bondage, yet to come, circulate in God’s people Israel - the legends of ‘Messiah’.
Romans 11:26-27: And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: "The deliverer will come from Zion; he will turn godlessness away from Jacob. 27 And this is my covenant with them when I take away their sins."
Many of the Jews were expecting a ‘Messiah’ to deliver them from oppressive nations round about them. The more discerning among them knew from the writings of Moses and other ‘prophets’ (inspired by God), that they actually needed delivering from themselves - their sin nature. Through successive centuries, God gives more revelation of Himself, His ways and character, patiently bearing with the warlike and sinful beings mankind has become. Since any further revelation of God came to and through human beings, the revelation was always incomplete, as it was interpreted by the spirit of man, hence man still believed God to be more Judge than mercy, more Deliverer than Saviour, more power than peace. In time, this would be corrected.
God’s plan was to break into human history as a human being – as one of us! God the Son, God’s sacrificial Lamb, came amongst us born of a woman, but supernaturally born of a virgin. This was necessary so that the sin line inherited by every man and woman born since Adam, was broken. The inherent human nature, which was to rebel against God, was not in the Lamb of God, yet the capacity for him to choose to rebel was there.
The Book of Revelation 13:8
8 All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast—all whose names have not been written in the book of life belonging to the Lamb that was slain from the creation of the world.
God’s Lamb, was in a sense ‘slain from the creation of the world’. God is eternal, beyond time, having created time for us to live by. God could see what would be in time the sacrifice required to deliver mankind from Satan’s reign over their lives. The just and legal requirement in the courts of heaven was that a human must resist sin in every form throughout his whole life, and to live perfectly before God the Father. Only then would he be a suitable sacrifice. The sinless one pays the price for the sinful ones.
The awful judgment of Almighty God against sin had to be channelled and focused on to the Deliverer, the Messiah, the ‘Suffering Servant’ prophesied in the Book of Isaiah, some 800 years before He came. One solitary life was to open the way to eternal life with God, for all who would choose that way……as long as he did not sin. The Deliverer’s name was JESUS, the Christ, the Messiah.
No wonder Satan tempted him in every way! No wonder Satan tried to have him exterminated as a baby through the actions of King Herod! Satan was mortally afraid of Jesus. John the Baptist rose up to declare that God’s Deliverer was coming to rescue Israel (and all mankind, though John did not realize this). After some 30 years of a perfect life before God, this Jesus, a carpenter in out-of-the-way Nazareth, emerged, declaring, ‘The Kingdom of God is at hand’.
For over three years, He taught about God’s kingdom, God’s plan for mankind, about eternal life…a relationship with God for ever…and backed up his teaching with amazing miracles and healings. All Israel was mobilized, but some hated and opposed Jesus, because either they were jealous, or afraid of him upsetting the status quo.
Though He came as Messiah, the Jews were expecting their coming messiah to liberate them from Roman oppression. Jesus refused to come with a sword, but rather to give Himself – for the liberation of all mankind.
At last, the full revelation of the grace, mercy and love of God towards mankind was revealed, through God’s Son, the perfect man, Jesus. Despised and rejected by His own people, (as prophesied by the writings of King David (Psalm 22) and by Isaiah the prophet some 800 years earlier (Isaiah chapter 53).
He was falsely accused by the religious establishment, and condemned to death by crucifixion, a terrible way to die, at the hand of the Roman authorities.
THE CROSS - EMBLAZONED ON THE COSMOS
(Picture of the very heart of the Whirlpool Galaxy from the Hubble space telescope)
The sacrificial Lamb willingly gave Himself on behalf of fallen mankind, the innocent for the guilty. At the cross, the justice of God was met, in that the price was paid for sin. God’s wrath against sin throughout all time was focused on that one period of a few hours when Jesus hung on the cross, his blood draining away after being whipped and scourged and nailed to the cross. The life is in the blood. Not only did Jesus pay the price through physical pain and suffering of soul, leading to His death, but by being for the first time in His spirit utterly separated from His Father in heaven and the Holy Spirit. Sin separates us from God, so Jesus had to experience this utter alienation.
He cries from the cross, ‘Father, why have You forsaken me?’ The earth is darkened by a supernatural darkness, The sun does not shine. With a final shout, Jesus declares, ‘It is finished!’ and God’s son finally gives up his spirit, and dies. When Jesus declared, ‘It is finished!’, he knew that God’s plan was accomplished. The price had been paid. Now all who would believe this, and put their faith and trust in God’s plan of salvation would be delivered from the consequences of sin, which is death, and eternal separation from God, and into everything of God…everything that is good. After three days in a tomb, God the Father raised Jesus from death, the first to overcome death. Thus God vindicated Jesus through the Resurrection. After appearing to many of His disciples and followers over a period of 40 days, Jesus ascended back to heaven. In the generations before the coming of Jesus, God could accept those who put their faith in God to deliver them, knowing the Messiah would come. God, who is outside of time, could accept their faith in the event yet to take place, just as He can accept our faith in this event which took place some 2000 years ago. It is by faith in the blood (the life) of Jesus given in our place, that we are saved. But saved from what, and for what? As said before, saved from the consequences of sin, which is death, and eternal separation from God, and from the torment of knowing that you could have been with God and enjoyed eternal life if only you had listened and turned to God, putting your faith in Him, and what His Son did on your behalf. That will be hell! Saved from many of the ravages of sin in your own life. Saved from the hell which was prepared for Satan and his minions. Still to come are the awful ‘End Times’ judgments of God against the continuing rebellion of many. These judgments are in His love and mercy, to shake us from our complacency and tendency to put our security in material things, in order to reach out to Him to be saved. Even now, these are beginning world-wide. These believers in Christ will pass through death, saved for eternal life in heaven, in relationship with God, joining all who have believed in His plan of salvation. Only then will each of us be able to know God in His fullness, since we now only see and experience Him in part in this life. He is the meaning and purpose of life. He is everything. God loves YOU. The drawing below captures something of Jesus’ love for every human being, including YOU. Jesus was and is God, with us and if we want, in us. He offers His life to you and will make your life complete, purposeful and with amazing destiny. He is calling you right now.

The picture above reveals something of Jesus' love for you. If you have recognised your need through reading this article, then make a beginning with God right now:
Lord God, I know I need to be saved from the consequences of my sin.
Thank You that You sent your Son, Jesus, to pay the price for my rebellion and independence of spirit against You.
Please forgive me. Come into my life by Your Spirit, and give me eternal life… a relationship with You….as You have promised.
Be my Lord so I may know You, and fashion me to be a true follower and disciple of Jesus Christ, my living Saviour. Amen.
