As Long as in the depth of the heart

NEFESH Y'HUDI HOMIYAH,

And towards the East

AYIN L'TZION TZOFIYAH,

An eye is still looking to Zion,

OD LO AVDAH TIKVA TEYNU.

Our hope is not lost yet -

HATIKVAH BAT SHNOT ALPAYIM

The two thousand year old hope

LIHYOT AM CHOFSHI B'ARTZEYNU,

To be a free nation in our land,

ERETZ TZION VIY'RUSHALAYIM.

The Land of Zion and Jerusalem.

LIHYOT AM CHOFSHI B'ARTZEYNU,

To be a free nation in our land,

ERETZ TZION VIY'RUSHALAYIM. (x2)

The Land of Zion and Jerusalem.

Contemporary English translation:

As long as deep in the heart,
The soul of a Jew yearns,
And forward to the East
To Zion, an eye looks
Our hope will not be lost,
The hope of two thousand years,
To be a free nation in our land,
The land of Zion and Jerusalem.

History

The title of the national anthem, HATIKVA, means "The Hope." It was written by Naftali Herz Imber (1856-1909), who moved to Palestine in 1882 from Galicia. The melody was arranged by Samuel Cohen, an immigrant from Moldavia, from a musical theme in Smetana's "Moldau" that is partly based on a Scandinavian folk song.

Hatikva expresses the hope of the Jewish people, that they would someday return to the land of their forefathers as prophesied in the Hebrew Bible. The Jewish people were exiled from Israel in 70 C.E. by the Roman army led by Titus who destroyed the Temple in Jerusalem. During the two thousand years of exile, the Jewish people said special daily prayers for return to Israel while facing the East in the direction of Jerusalem. They celebrated the holidays according to Hebrew seasons and calendar. Zion is synonymous with Israel and Jerusalem.

SONG:  'ISRAEL MY PEOPLE'

I received this song in its completeness at a conference in Florida. I felt prompted by the Spirit of God to leave the conference room and go to my own room. There the words and music of the song came to me amid tears and a sense of God's love for His ancient people Israel. There was no working at it. The song simply came immediately - no credit to me! Here is my account of how the song was given to me and the song words also:

Back in 1981 I was a greenhorn! The Lord had called me out of school teaching into some kind of ministry not yet revealed, but had not given permission to apply to a bible college.

Whilst grappling with six days a week at home studying the word and in prayer, the Spirit led me to a wonderful opportunity to visit the United States of America, during which Father God steered me through all sorts of situations. But I came back a different person. I had received a revelation: something of God’s heart for His ancient people Israel. Nothing has been the same since.

I had spent some six months under the Lord’s direct hand of training, learning to depend on Him for provision, to read and study His word, to pray, to seek His face and learn to hear His voice.  Now the Lord revealed His pleasure in this by making a way for me to take a break.

Friends of mine in Richmond, Surrey, namely Reg and Monica, were planning to go on a trip to Florida, USA, in order to attend and be involved in a national Methodist conference to be held there. Monica was also a gifted singer and a Jewess. As I was a Methodist Local Preacher at the time, and as this couple knew I loved to sing and play the guitar, they invited me to join them. They would arrange my place at the conference and pay the fees, but I would have to find the return air fare.

By the grace of God, an uncle heard of the plan and decided to fund the flights. I left England with the return ticket, passport, my guitar, a suitcase and five pounds in my pocket. Three weeks later, I returned to England laden with presents for others and myself, thrilled with the experience and with fifteen pounds in my pocket! God is so good!

After a week’s holiday at a Christian family’s home in the Miami area, we were asked to guest on a Miami Channel 10 TV programme made around Monica’s singing and mine, and around interviews with the three of us. It went out on air the next evening. Then we were bound for Lake Yale in the north of Florida where the annual American Methodist Conference was to be held. During that time, I was able to visit the then leader of the American Methodist Church and share my story of God’s goodness over a meal. Afterwards I found myself interceding for him with tears during that night whilst sitting besides Lake Yale. Something of the great man’s need seemed to penetrate my being. I learned from that experience that even great national leaders can yearn for a closer walk with God.

At the conference, which lasted a week, God met me in a profound experience. During a conference session, I was suddenly aware of God’s voice directing me to go to my room and wait on Him. As I did so, He began to open my heart to His passion and grief for the people of Israel, for the Jewish nation, scattered world-wide and in Israel itself. He began to unfold a revelation of His covenant commitment to this ancient race which had rejected His Son, Yeshua, the Messiah.

As I wept and prayed about all this, a song came to me - clearly and quickly, both words and tune together. It was all about God’s love for Israel. It had a haunting, poignant melody in the minor key. When I had sung it through, put guitar chords to it and written it down, I returned to the conference and told my two friends what had happened. At the break, they approached a conference leader and I was asked to sing this song and share what had happened in front of the whole conference - some thousands of people! There was quite a response to the story and the song, which goes like this:

Israel flag

              ISRAEL, MY PEOPLE

Israel, My people, why do you turn from Me?

I AM your Messiah, I long for your liberty

Israel, My people, My heart so longs to share

The love I have to give you,

But tears I have to bear…………

Oh Israel, My people, please turn back to Me

I AM YESHUA, your Messiah, Oh let me set you free

Israel, My people, there is much I have to tell

I would teach, reveal, and guide you

I want to make you well…………

Oh, ISRAEL, My people, it is hard to bear the pain

Come back to Me, My people...and we'll be one again

Israel, My people………..

Israel, My love.

Now, you may well say that this was a classic emotive song without much biblical foundation. The Spirit of God sometimes uses such means in order to get our attention and in order to stimulate us in the study of Scripture to find out what He does say about a subject or issue.

Certainly Israel were described as the people of God in the Old Testament of the Bible. Certainly Jesus is the Messiah of Israel and the Anointed One sent to bring salvation to the whole world. Israel has indeed turned from or rejected their Messiah and therefore suffers from the bondage which comes as a result. And God does express His emotions, His heart, His feelings in Scripture, as well as His truths.

 ‘YOU RAISE ME UP’

This song moves me deeply towards thanksgiving to the Lord, and challenge for my life.

Brendan Graham (born 1945, County Tipperary[1]) is an Irish novelist and composer. He wrote the lyrics for Rolf Løvland's "You Raise Me Up". Løvland was inspired to write the song from The Whitest Flower, Graham's first novel.[3] "You Raise Me Up" was a huge international hit for Irish boyband Westlife.

In 2004, the song was played more than 500,000 times on American radio. In late 2005, there were over 80 versions available in USA alone, and it has become nominated for Gospel Music Awards four times, including "Song of the Year." This version by Christian group Selah (with both verses included, as originally written) also went to No. 1 on Billboard's Christian charts.

  LYRICS:

When I am down, and oh my soul, so weary.
When troubles come, and my heart burdened be.
Then I am still and wait here in the silence.
Until You come and sit awhile with me.

You raise me up so I can stand on mountains.
You raise me up to walk on stormy seas.
I am strong when I am on your shoulders.
You raise me up to more than I can be.

You raise me up so I can stand on mountains.
You raise me up to walk on stormy seas.
I am strong when I am on your shoulders.
You raise me up to more than I can be.

There is no life, no life without its hunger.
Each restless heart beats so imperfectly.
But when you come and I am filled with wonder.
Sometimes I think I glimpse eternity.

                                                    POEM:   ISRAEL & THE CHURCH

Out of the nations a people were chosen

Given the law and given a land

Commissioned by God as a living witness

Preparing the way for Messiah to come

Out of the nations a Church was chosen

Given the Saviour and a heavenly land

Called by God to be kingdom people

Expressing His kingdom through faith, truth and love

Out of Israel a people were chosen

People of faith, trust and hope

From Abraham’s time and through the ages

Obedient to God, a remnant for Him

Out of the ‘Church’ a people were chosen

People of faith, trust and hope

From Jesus’ time and through the ages

Obedient to God, a remnant for Him

Out of Israel a committed people

Those responding with faith to the call

to follow their God, their Lord, their life

Jewish believers - the ‘Israel of God’

Out of the Church a committed people

Those responding with faith to the call

to follow their God, their Lord, their life

Gentile believers - the mercy of God

Out of Israel and from the Church

God has chosen a people of faith

Whose hearts are for Him, whose lives glorify Him

Together as one the true people of God

(Romans 9v6-13 & v27; Galatians 6v16 Hebrews 11v6;

Eph 1v11ff, 2v11-22; Gal 3v26-29; Coloss 3v11 etc. )

‘Israel of God’ = Jewish believers!

POEM:   Fury Rises

 by Juliet Dawn

(October 9th 2010 - Welsh National Day of Repentance)

This cause is not a pass-time, a fantasy or game!

Look and see My Israel! Lost and weak and lame!

You think I'm not impassioned as I see my cherished flail?

The world has filtered vision; seeing all through Islam's veil.

Hatred meets with poison, and poison turns to war,

No ally left for Israel, she's accused on every score.

But you have heard My warnings; My Bride should know the truth,

An' it's time to heed my calling, for Naomi needs her Ruth.

Respond this day with action and passion in your heart.

You're meant to bear My purposes, be bold and set apart!

But Church has carried apathy and edited My Word,

So caught up in religion, that My voice has not been heard!

Yet you are those My people who have caught My Spirit's cry.

I'm aching for my chosen, as their enemies will try

To crush them and destroy them and make the world believe,

That somehow they're deserving of the onslaught they received!

This is VILE injustice and it make My anger rise!

And you who are the gentiles, should not absorb these lies!

My ancient words are standing and will not be overthrown,

That Zion is My Glory and her people are My own!

So hear, My children! Listen! For time grows ever near,

When enemies of Israel will be crippled by their fear,

For I WILL unleash my fury and exercise My Might,

As all that stands against her, will be judged and then be smite!

Do not be left uncertain of the things that are to come.

My rule will be established from My throne, Jerusalem!

And powers, lands and nations, that stand to thwart this plan,

Will taste the wrath of heaven, as My armies meet with man!

Yahweh stands with Israel; believe that it is so!

The hands that strangle Israel are also Heaven's foe.

Yes, Scripture bears My promises; they're there for all to find,

The years have not erased them... just the Church is largely blind!

Align yourself with Israel, for she needs your watchful prayer.

The treat of mass destruction lingers daily in the air!

I'm making clear My purpose, so you won't mis-hear My will...

She is evermore My Chosen and her torment grieves Me still!

Escalate your mission! Escalate your prayer!

Escalate your purpose! Demonstrate you care!

The bombs may breach the boundaries, but so do all your cries,

And they're merging over Zion, as My judgement fills the skies!
