Let’s begin the year by preparing ourselves, with God’s help, for what is to come.

 1.  2012 – A preparation based on Revelation 2 v 1-7

My own home church, amongst many it would appear throughout the nation, is experiencing a call to live clean lives devoted to God. It is as though the Lord is no longer willing to put up with our dallying with sin in our lives. Read through all these verses which describe a revelation of the true condition of the church at Ephesus, from Jesus’ viewpoint.

Revelation 2v1-7:  "To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: These are the words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand and walks among the seven golden lamp stands: 2 I know your deeds, your hard work and your perseverance.  I know that you cannot tolerate wicked men, that you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found them false.  3 You  have  persevered  and  have  endured  hardships for my name, and have not grown weary. 4 Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken your first love. 5 Remember the height from which you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lamp stand from its place. 6 But you have this in your favour: You hate the practices of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate. 7 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.

As I read this, several thoughts came to mind. I also looked up some commentaries, all leading to the comments below. The church at Ephesus - and the individuals in it – reflects a hardworking, persevering faith, with an ability to discern between right and wrong and declare it. The trouble is, the methods and ways had become more important than the One who gave the revelation and the discernment. These, and other distractions, had led to a stagnation of love for others and particularly of their love for Christ. Anything more important than our Lord Jesus in our lives is an idol.

Ask yourself as you look back over the years, was your love for Jesus ever stronger, more intense, intimate, close, and attractive than at present? Is the way you spend your time now as when close to the Lord?

There are times when the Lord wakes me up in the early hours and tells me to get up and meet with Him downstairs. Such times are very precious and rewarding – sometimes just an intimacy of spending time together in the still hours, sometimes fresh revelation or guidance. But, it doesn’t happen as often at present...maybe the Lord knows I have not been so keen?  As I read the verses above, I decided to repent of that lack of intimacy and availability, for a lost fervency of love towards God incurs His displeasure, and grieves Him. Interestingly enough, I am right now writing this early on New Year’s Day, the Lord having got me up for a sweet and intimate time together in Exodus, and then leading me to the word processor!

The passage above also indicates the results of carrying on in our own way, without due regard for Jesus. The lampstand will be removed. A lampstand is there to give light, to show the way....to pass on revelation and guidance. Maybe your light has been dimming, the revelation you once enjoyed from the Lord lacking? But if you return to the former ways of intimacy, walking closely with the Lord, enjoying the presence of the person of the Holy Spirit, and the light He gives through each day........

Isaiah 58v8:  8 Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear.  Isaiah 60v1-3:  1 "Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you. 2 See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the Lord rises upon you and his glory appears over you. 3 Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn.

Others will recognise the light upon you, His presence, and be drawn to Him through you and your words, your life and ministry. The church at Ephesus did indeed heed the warning, and was later commended for its faith and love in a book written by Ignatus, and as follows:

Ephesians 5v1-18:  1 Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children 2 and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and  sacrifice  to God. 3 But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people. 4 Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. 5 For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy personsuch a man is an idolaterhas any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. 6 Let no-one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God's wrath comes on those who are disobedient. 7 Therefore do not be partners with them.

8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light 9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) 10 and find out what pleases the Lord. 11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. 13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, 14 for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said: "Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you." 15 Be very careful, then, how you livenot as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is. 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.

The passage above reminds me of Mark 12v30-31:   30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.' 31 The second is this: 'Love your neighbour as yourself.' There is no commandment greater than these."  Also of 1 John 4v19-21:  19 We love because he first loved us. 20 If anyone says, "I love God," yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen. 21 And he has given us this command: Whoever loves God must also love his brother.

So, as we begin a new year, let’s examine our own hearts. Do we love God? Do we love our brother? Are we holding on to resentments or unforgiveness toward anyone? The reward for one who examines themselves and repents, returning to the Lord is one of victory, overcoming, and enjoying the life of God in your life. Jesus said that eternal life is knowing God. There is simply nothing to compare with the peace, joy and fulfillment of walking with Jesus!

But what of those who do not heed the counsel of the Lord over this?

Jeremiah 2v1-5:  1 The word of the Lord came to me: 2 "Go and proclaim in the hearing of Jerusalem: " 'I remember the devotion of your youth, how as a bride you loved me and followed me through the desert, through a land not sown. 3 Israel was holy to the Lord, the firstfruits of his harvest; all who devoured her were held guilty, and disaster overtook them,' " declares the Lord. 4 Hear the word of the Lord, O house of Jacob, all you clans of the house of Israel. 5 This is what the Lord says: "What fault did your fathers find in me, that they strayed so far from me? They followed worthless idols and became worthless themselves.

Revelation 2v5 gives a strong warning: I will come. This is not the Second Coming of the Lord, but a special visitation of judgment....cf. v16: 16 Repent therefore! Otherwise, I will soon come to you and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth. When God speaks against someone.....beware!  Whilst reading and meditating on all this, I was given a short word of prophecy, as follows:

‘I want to bring you back to the path which will bring you the greatest blessing and the greatest fulfillment. So take heart. Allow My discipline to work in you, to take you away from things that distract you; to discover afresh a love for others.......and to find Me again.’

Finally, on a more personal note, the Lord put on my heart to have a three day retreat with Him, to advance in understanding His purposes for both myself and Jackie, my wife. As a result, I have been reminded that our first love in serving the Lord used to be working across the churches, locally and nationally, when based in the Staines / Heathrow area. The Lord is speaking again about that first love…..that particular emphasis which was laid down when we went to Kingdom Faith Bible College and after. It has not been in the sense of a rebuke, but rather perhaps that God is wanting me again to pick up the mantle of that concern for the whole church in the locality and across the nation. For a number of years we have focused on one stream - apart from the work across the churches abroad, and the ’Hatikvah’ publications and website. It may be that availability to other streams will be required. True believers are all one body in Christ Jesus. That is how He sees us - the one body, His people. It will be interesting to see how He leads my wife and I over this, in the coming days. I am having another retreat at the end of January to dig deeper. If this is of Him, things will happen.

We all have our dreams. One I have is to facilitate local church leaders praying together weekly. Also for a prayer centre for all the believers in my own town. What of a women’s refuge, a house for men to be set free, a home for the homeless, the needs of the poor, the widow and orphan?

Pray for God to work out His purposes in you - and us - this year.

2. Prophecy for 2012    (By Sarah - well known to my church.

‘2012, I believe is the year of PRESSURE AND GLORY.

“Arise and shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you. See darkness covers the Earth and the darkness is over the people, but the Lord rises upon you and his glory appears over you.”(Is60v1-3)

2012 see the opportunity for the most unprecedented release of the Lord’s glory and presence in the lives of God’s people. The economic pressures, and pressures within the world systems, are creating an opportunity for the Lord’s people to make a transition out of their flesh to a higher walk in the Spirit. As pressure on the flesh will increase this year. That pressure will force a greater cohesion within the body of Christ, those who will humble themselves before God and others, and ask for help in those areas where they are weak.

We are to pursue a greater marriage between the natural and spiritual in 2012, with the Spirit remaining in dominance. Leaders in all arenas need to prune back their activities toward the end of 2011 to make room,so that when the Glory comes  they have the needed capacity to absorb what has been released, both spiritually and practically….asking the Lord what activities and mandates He is initiating and resourcing. The Lord’s intention is that the pressure causes His people to lean on Him hard, and be strengthened and equipped to handle and receive great outpouring of His Glory, His power and His presence. In this outpouring we will also see a real release of strategic direction – plans and directives from heaven – that are designed to impact the world.’

Pray for such revelation to be heeded and used appropriately.

3. Revival preaching!    (Brief notes on recent preaching by an elder at our own church).  Firstly, David, a former bible college student, gave testimony of what God is doing in his area of Scotland….210 young people saved recently at a high school there! Also how a church on the Isle of Lewes has been expanding its premises by faith. They have now just learned that in due course 5000 university students will be on the island, which is to become of university status. Glory to God!  Now to the preaching:

We are on a journey together. God is faithful to His covenant promises. There is blessing in obedience (Deuteronomy chapters 28 & 30).  Live clean, holy lives. God requires everything of us. To die to ourselves. Don’t play with the world. Luke 11v33-36: ‘The eye is lamp of the body‘. Is light or darkness coming in? Watch those eye and ear gates! Keep your hearts clean. Let God consume you!

This makes possible our senior pastor's  vision of Revival for a generation, turning the tide of a godless generation.’ Hate our own lives - love Him. Luke 14v25-35: JESUS is the Pearl of great price. It is worth everything to gain Him. Our natural love for others needs to be superseded by His supernatural love for others flowing through us.

The same for our thinking over finances. It is ALL HIS money - to be available to Him! Relationships belong to Him. e.g. marriage – operating out of supernatural love, not just the natural love for one another.  Phil 3v7-11 Know Christ. Have Him. Live in Him, at one with Him. This gives fullness of life!  Early church communion was taken daily - why?  Because the believers wanted to keep Christ-centred. Do you want to witness more supernatural events? Then give up your natural ways. The promises from God are for those with surrendered lives.

Pray. Surrender your life afresh to God. Holy Spirit direct me. Live Your life in me. Be glorified in all I say and do. Give me the desires of YOUR heart that they may become mine. Rescue me from indifference to You, and to the needs of others. Have mercy upon me, my God.

4. Islamic & Western Winters

Now to 2012 on the world’s stage. The ‘Arab Spring’ was welcomed by some in the West as a development to bring about western style democracies in the Middle East. Some analysts now see an ‘Islamic Winter’ emerging. The theology of Tunisia’s elected Ennahda Party is based on the Muslim Brotherhood, which seeks to impose Islamic law throughout the world. The Ennahda leader has already announced that they would be imposing ‘moderate’ Islamic law on a nation which used to be one of the most progressive in the Arab world. The post-Gaddafi Libyan leaders are now imposing Sharia law. In Egypt, it looks as though the Muslim Brotherhood will have an outright majority or hold the balance of power - this is the most extreme branch of the Muslim Brotherhood. Islamic groups in Turkey & Lebanon have been consolidating their position in similar vein. All this could lead to a radical theology led by fanatics in power that increases the likelihood of all-out war with Israel, including weapons of mass destruction.

Pray that Western leaders see through the Arab Spring to the true consequences for Israel and the West. Pray for Israel to be prepared - and looking to the God of Israel - and for Arab peoples to come to the Lord.

Aside from this, Europe and many western nations are still struggling economically…..remember my publication sent out widely and on the web? ’The Financial Crisis…we reap what we sow.’ It is still very relevant. The present  scenario in Europe is developing where someone with the ability to bring it all together, to sort the mess, could arise. Add to this Iran and her emerging nuclear capability, threatening Israel, and we see the nations looking for answers. Of course WE know the answer is to be found in the Lord Jesus Christ, but others will be looking to an alternative ’saviour’. Is the stage being set for the emergence of the Antichrist?  Whatever the situation, God’s kingdom is advancing, and forceful men and women, of faith and truth, perseverance and dedication to Christ, will be used of God as a mighty testimony to His Name and His Kingdom…glory to God!

5. Israel and the Land issue

In our day, it is not Antiochus Epiphanes IV who is pushing the Israelites to worship his gods; rather it is the Global economy that needs Arab oil, Arab trade and Arab financial favours. All of these factors are pushing Israel and the Jewish world at large to abandon the Torah of Moses as well as the God of Abraham, to become like everyone else. The ‘kings’ of modern powerful nations are the counterparts of the Seleucids, and who are pressurizing Israel to conform to their demands and to assimilate into a New World Order.

Pray against the soul destroying atheism in many people in Israel, and for God to corner His people into recognising their need of Him, that they turn to the God of Israel. Israel forest fire:  Fire on Mount Carmel is a feature of the Old Testament scripture. Elijah called down God’s fire to demonstrate God’s authority over demonic and idolatrous ‘gods’ (1 Kings 18). The fire on Mount Carmel which destroyed so much forest there, may have had God’s hand in it. The never-ceasing east wind, the November drought, the string of mistakes made by fire services and others, and the fascinating and selective path the fire took, destroying certain locations connected with the occult and idolatry, give a clue as to divine involvement!

Praise God for what He is doing in raising up a Jewish and Arab expression of His Church - the ‘One New Man in Christ’ (Ephesians 2) in Israel and the nations surrounding. Other Gentile Christians are also very active in serving, outreaching and supporting Israel.

Pray for the 100+ messianic fellowships and over 15000 believers worshipping in these, to be a radiant witness and that they (and we in the West) continue to develop practical and spiritual support to Israel.

It seems appropriate to include a more detailed analysis of the land dispute and the facts behind this. You may wish to view a ‘You tube’ video:  ‘Israel and the Palestinian conflict the truth about the West Bank found on You Tube itself, using the title above, or go to my website: ‘hatikvah1.org’ to see this video on the ‘Topical - Israel’ page.

Here are some notes from the video: The media’s frequently used terms for Israel being in the West Bank are,  ‘Occupied territories’, ‘1967 borders’, ‘illegal settlements’. The usual story is promoted that in the 1967 ‘Six Day War’, Israel captured the West Bank from the Palestinians,  refused UN calls to retreat, and built illegal settlements. From whom did Israel capture the West Bank? In 1967 there was no Arab nation or state by the name of ‘Palestine’.

Israel took over the West Bank from Jordan in an act of self defence, after Jordan joined a war launched by Egypt and Syria to destroy Israel....destroying countries is illegal!   UN in 1967 rejected repeated Arab and Soviet attempts to declare Israel the aggressor. Security Council Resolution 242 did not demand a unilateral Israeli withdrawal, rather to negotiate a solution which would leave Israel with secure and recognised boundaries – in effect, defensible borders. Why Jordan in West Bank in first place? Legal justification? None...Jordan simply occupied it during its previous attempt to destroy Israel, in 1948. Jordan changed the commonly accepted name, ‘Judea and Samaria’ into ‘The West Bank’.

Very few nations recognised the legality of Jordan’s occupation - not even any of the other Arab states! So whose territory is this piece of land?  Until 1917, the Ottoman Empire occupied the whole region. After losing in World War 1, the Ottoman’s relinquished their 500 year control to the Allied forces, which decided to divide the old Empire into countries. Britain’s foreign minister, Lord Balfour, recognised the Jewish people’s historical right to their homeland. A small area, equivalent to about half of one percent of the Middle East was designated for this purpose. Britain received a mandate from the League of Nations to promote the establishment of a Jewish homeland.

The Jewish homeland not only included the West Bank (26%) but the East bank of the Jordan river, this comprising 74% of the area of homeland!  - evidence that Jews have already accepted some painful compromises. The United Nations re-affirmed the Jewish state including the West Bank after WW2. Now, with the British Mandate ending, the UN General Assembly resolution 181 in 1947 recommended the establishment of two states, one Jewish and one Arab.

The Jews accepted this and went on to create a state of Israel. The Arabs refused the compromise and launched a war to destroy the newly established state of Israel. Resolution 181 remained therefore with no legal standing. In this war, a cease fire line was formed, where the Israeli and Arab forces stopped fighting. At the insistence of Arab leaders, this line was defined as having no political significance. The line is often referred to as the 1967 border, it is not from 1967 and was never an international border. This is why a more exact legal definition for the West Bank, according to International law, is really the same as in so many other areas where there are or were territorial disputes, but which are not defined as ‘occupied’. For example, Zubarah, the Tumbs Islands, the Western Sahara and Kashmir, amongst many others. They are not considered ‘occupied’ but rather ‘disputed’ territories.

In summary, Israel’s presence in the West Bank is the result of a war of self defence. The West Bank should not be considered as ‘occupied’ by Israel because there was no previous legal sovereign in the area. Therefore the real definition should be ‘disputed’ territory. The 1947 partition plan has no current legal standing, while Israel’s claim to the land was clearly recognised by the international community during the 20th Century. That is why the presence and construction of Israeli settlements in the West Bank should not be considered illegal. World renowned jurists, like Steven Swebbel, who headed the International Court of Justice, agree with this view.

So what’s the solution for the dispute over the West Bank? There is no magic solution. But the only way a solution will ever be reached is if we base our negotiations on legal and historical facts. Let’s not use terms like ‘1967 borders’, or ‘Occupied territories’. They are simply not politically correct!

NB. We have prayed for Israel for 30 years. We now pray every day and have hosted a prayer group weekly for many years.  Pray that God show you how to pray for Israel, and get in touch with Prayer for Israel (www.prayer4i.org), and Christian Friends of Israel (www.cfi.org.uk) amongst others, who can supply you with relevant materials.

6. Where two agree.  (The ‘prayer of agreement‘).

The prayer of agreement spoken of by Jesus in Matthew 18v19-20 goes like this:  19 "Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. 20 For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them."

So often, Jesus’ words were enlarging and expounding truths already revealed in part in the Old Testament revelation of the scriptures. In this case, perhaps Amos 3:3   Do two walk together unless they have agreed to do so? The context of this passage is with regard to the Lord and His people relating together. As one party walks through life, through situations, through time, with the other, the basis of a relationship through which real agreement could come forth was being laid. The same could be said for the marriage relationship, or a working relationship, for instance. I remember the years involved in the ‘Walk’ missions around Britain. After living, working and snoring together, our teams of ten soon got to know each other.  Often we worked in pairs, and that relationship became even more effective as  time went on – unless there was no agreement. Peter and John seemed to have such a walk together as the scriptures unfold. Similarly, Paul and Barnabus – until their disagreement. Then Paul and Silas walked in agreement, etc.

The prayer of agreement spoken of in Matthew 18v19-20, quoted above, required more than a cursory getting together over a matter in prayer, and deciding that it would be good to pray for this to happen. There was a relationship involved, the implication of time spent together discerning the mind of the Lord, and each other, before prayer.

Looking back over the years, the most powerful prayers in terms of their result, have been those where the process of relationship, and partnership in Christ have operated. The Lord clearly does use prayers where two or three - or a whole host - gather together in His name, but the strength and fruit of prayer involving those who have walked together through situations, be it two or a whole prayer group, will be more effective. The work will be done, the prayer answered. No wonder Jesus taught that the most powerful and effective strategy of Satan against the Church was:  Luke 11:17  "Any kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and a house divided against itself will fall.’’

Spiritual warfare, binding and loosing...yes, they have their place in dealing with enemy activity, but the primary strategy of bringing division into the camp of the church, or between couples, or teams, must be recognised and dealt with. Arguing, accusing, gossip, slander, judgment, lack of submission, will all result in a divided camp. Jesus warned us of this, knowing its consequence.

As we love one another, learn to walk with one another, honour and serve one another, then the likelihood of effective and powerful prayers together will be increased.  Consider your own marriage, family, believing colleague, life group or home group, church, etc. How can you apply this teaching to bring a more effective agreement - and the fruit of this - into your prayers together?

 7. Living out the Gospel in the Workplace

At our church a while ago, we had a series of interviews with people about their workplaces. These thoughts are what remained with me afterwards.

Matthew 5v13-14…In our workplace, our ‘marketplace‘, we are to be like a city set on a hill - obvious, noticeable, having an effect. We are to be like salt, bringing out the taste and savour of God’s kingdom into society. We are to be light, bringing revelation and leading the way. We are to ‘BE’ in the workplace, more than ‘speak’:

Matthew 5v13-16: "You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men. "You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.

How can you and I live an uncompromised life in the marketplace / workplace?

Genesis 2v15…before the fall, man was given the charge to work the land and care for it. This is God’s design. (NB. The role of mums and unpaid workers was  acknowledged, but the focus was on paid employment). Now some interviews:

R -     is a fabricator for a welding company. God revealed to him a vision to be the best fabricator in the world! He told his company about the vision, and asked them to get the big jobs to prove it! They responded to this, and the company (and Richard) have a huge reputation now, and take on great jobs. Richard prays that when other companies can’t do a job, they are approached, and they can do the job. God answers, & reveals the way forward, so R - claims the work by faith.

N -    is an administrator, and a trouble-shooter for a company. She sees herself as a blessing-bringer. For example, God led her to a school and to intercede in the Spirit whilst working there over a situation involving major intimidation of staff. God broke through and blessing came upon the school, and the problem was resolved.

A -    ran her own business, but during this time was attacked by cancer. God met her, saved and healed her.

Later she went to Bible college for two years, and then she served in another ministry for two years whilst ‘tent making’ to provide the finances for this.  She then took a new full time job. In this role, God raised her up to save the company pensions scheme. The condition was that if the company’s finances turned round, they would save the scheme. After prayer, the company finances did turn round, and the scheme was saved, to the benefit of all the workers in the company! We are sent to influence our workplace for good! The root Hebrew word for ‘work’ is same as for ‘worship’. The word means, ‘service’. God wants us amongst those who need to be influenced and helped. We are to act in righteousness.

RG -  ‘God has put you where you are in the workplace. You can worship Him through your work….but act in righteousness and integrity.’ He was a CEO in the health service. Persecution earlier in his career shaped him for the role. After a successful career, he worked full time in the church for three years, and as a result, his faith grew. Then he went back to work in the marketplace. Together with others, He set up a new company. They needed the work to flow, so he decided to sing over the situation. (See Isaiah 54 ‘ Sing O barren woman’). Things began to change for the better.  Later, the Lord gave instruction to ‘cast your net over the right side’ (John 21v6) in relation to the need for new developments and markets. As it turned out, the new marketplace was to the West...to the right!

RG - advised us to: ‘Show proper respect for everyone…honour your leaders.’ (1 Peter 2v17). You are to honour your company. ‘Working with all your heart as for the Lord’ (Coloss 3v23). He reminded us that being slack in work is akin to destroying (Prov 18v9). W are to enjoy our work and show care for the workplace.

We are to have faith for ‘signs & wonders’ including debts demolished! Rom 8v28 God works for our good, Rom 8v37 we are more than conquerors….victorious!

Pray for your managers, clients, customers, and co-workers, etc. Activate the word of God in your workplace through prayer and being led of God. For years we have held a regular workplace prayer group on a Monday evening in our home - just for an hour - to facilitate such prayer. In my own workplace there have been clear seasons of God’s activity in salvation, healing and restoration.

Finally, as we sent a recent newsletter out at Christmas with news in it about us as a family, suffice to say we are all doing well!     In Christ Jesus.

1. 'Bits' & 'Pieces'

Pamphlet: I have been discussing with people in my workplace the whole question of whether God is good or not. I also came across Dr. Dino(saur)’s website, which makes a good case for a biblically young earth. The result, by weaving these thoughts and information together, is the pamphlet enclosed. It may be of interest to you, and I hope will prove stimulating.

Cyprus: Our recent Cyprus ministry visit followed writing a letter to the ‘Church at Larnaca’, which was distributed amongst church leaders there. The first week involved lots of preaching, visits to homes, prayer groups and meetings with leaders. Local churches met together for four evenings of meetings and for prayer and fasting for Larnaca and its people.

Israel: The second week, following preaching about Israel, a young Jewish man who dropped in to the church asked us if he could stay with us. He was homeless, jobless, and had fallen away from his Christian faith – he became a believer a year ago.  We agreed to take him in for the week, as the family who use our apartment would be returning at the end of the week. We prayed together and spent time discipling him. We sent him out to look for work all week.

By the Friday evening, he had a job in a hotel, and had met an older Jewish man who agreed to sponsor him to rent an apartment. Saturday the hotel told him they wanted to train him for management. (He is gifted in languages and with people). Finally, before leaving us to take over his new apartment, he said he wanted to visit Israel in September, with a long term view of returning to his own land in the next year or two….making ‘Aliyah’. God IS good!

2. Family

Daughter: is very well. She has just returned from five weeks’ placement’ which marks the finish of her bible college course except for her assigned work at Faith Camp. The placement was in Israel, dear to Jo’s heart. With her friend from college, she stayed in Jerusalem a while, but most of their placement was spent in Haifa…Mount Carmel Assembly, a church in Israel with which our own church (KF) has strong links. Her particular assignment was to serve at the Women’s Refuge. As to the future, we wait in anticipation of what the Lord is leading her into. We would not be at all surprised if it included Israel !

Wife: She is serving our lifegroup, supporting my ministry, and continues to work for a living two days a week, sometimes more when the need arises. She remains keen on tennis and enjoyed Wimbledon. She loves nature and wildlife, so we enjoyed the visit to Horsham Capitol, of Chris Packham (BBC’s ‘Springwatch’.)She is catching up with relatives at present. Her vision is to see people’s lives change.

David: I am just recovering from an injury at work, where a spear-like rod sticking out of a container at lower shin height caught me as I walked past. Never mind, all things work together for good…I have a week or so off work! This follows a chest infection and swollen legs earlier this year. Praise God for His healing, and the rest and opportunities this has presented. Fortunately, none of these were serious. Other than that, Cyprus, work, our church, the lifegroup, prayer, the website, and my mum, all keep us busy and stimulated. Mum is 89 and doing well except for memory lapses. She loves reading the Scriptures out aloud.

3. Prayer for Messianic Fellowships in Israel

The growing number of believers living in and native to Israel, both Jewish and Arab,

have now established over 100 fellowships. Over the years, we have followed their progress and developing maturity, through praying for them on a regular basis (using the Prayer for Israel bi-monthly prayer guide). We recommend this guide, obtainable by emailing pfi@prayer4i.org   Also the monthly prayer guide from Christian Friends of Israel, which gives a broader sweep for prayer for the nation of Israel and its people. info@cfi.org.uk

An example of the Prayer for Israel Guide is found on their May/June issue, page 20, about the Hasdey Yeshua congregation in Arad (southern Israel). There is weekly harassment outside believers’ homes - shouting day and night, door bell buzzing, etc. The hall the fellowship had hired became too small, so they applied for other halls to hire, but no-one will hire to them because they are Messianic Jews.

The local council is opposing them through zoning restrictions & red tape. They currently meet in the open air, after a winter spent meeting in homes where the house groups have multiplied. This group is also acquiring a recovery house for women and children in need. Most of the Israeli churches have at least one very practical outreach to the locals…women’s refuges, drink or drug release centres, ‘life’ ministries to those considering abortions, medical aid, etc.

On p21 in another congregation, An Ethiopian believer there has been cast out of his family because of his faith in Yeshua (Jesus), and taken in by a member of the congregation. These examples demonstrate life and growth amid great problems and opposition. When we pray for and thus bless the growing congregations in Israel, we bless the nation…and God therefore promises to bless us! (Gen.12v3)

From a recent CFI broadsheet, we learn that the world has gone upside down in regard to Israel: A UN facility for youth is named after a suicide bomber, who gained entrance to Jerusalem on a Palestinian ambulance, then exploded herself and injured 150 others. A terrorist butchered 5 members of a family in Israel including a 4 month old baby and a 3 year old toddler sleeping in their own beds. This is grotesque! This received only very secondary attention in the world’s media, principally Australia. An Oxford lecturer said that Jewish settlers should be shot dead, seeing them as Nazis, racists, and having nothing but hatred for them! Other terrorists are being honoured for killings of Israelis. This is persistent incitement. May many stand with Israel through these turbulent times.

 4. Hope through the Church

Last edition carried a great deal about the End Times, some of which could be alarming. Yet God is greater than the End Times! A worldwide financial crisis and catastrophes to come will not daunt us. Though the world in general may become apprehensive of what is coming on the world (see below), we the Church are the ones who should know God’s peace, and have ‘the word that sustains the weary’, and able to give the ‘reason for our Hope’.

Luke 21v24-28: Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled. "There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. Men will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near."

What a glorious passage! It encompasses the realism of the End Times, but from a standpoint of Christ’s victory, God working it all for good, and our ultimate redemption. Though God wants us to approach this present age with realism, He wants us to have HOPE (heb: ‘tikvah’) for the present and for the future. (Jeremiah 29v11, 31v17, Proverbs 23v18, 24v14.)

So what is God doing in His Church as the world gets darker? His Church is becoming brighter…a light to the world, a lamp set up on a stand, a light on a hill. The Church is becoming more full of the revelation of who God is, and His glory.

The Church is moving more in the supernatural, demonstrating an alternative way of life by living in the Kingdom of God and by its principles.

The Church is showing that God is GOOD! There is a budding and blossoming in the true Church worldwide. The believers - the Body of Christ- around the earth are being stirred to faith, love in action, Gospel declaration and demonstration. The Church is becoming truly relevant, caring, heralding salvation, hope, and the glory of God. The Spirit of advancement is upon the Church! We are taking ground from the enemy. Moving forward with aggressive faith and prayer, yet that faith working through love. Hallelujah! Nothing can stop us! Whatever comes against us in these present days, and in the End Times, we can’t lose! Jesus has already gained the complete victory over the world, the flesh and the devil! We are simply involved in the mopping up operation! The war is won! This attitude is permeating the Church more and more. That revelation has been let loose by God to prepare a Church for the End Times, a Church which will stand with courage and boldness, confidence and trust in our God, and which will be a powerful witness to Jesus. The place of fear and domination by the enemy is being replaced by the restoration of our confidence in God, in the power of the name of Jesus, in holy lives, in the promises of God. We are advancing………

Finally, prophecy often has several fulfillments, the nearer and the farther. For instance, before Jesus’ first coming, it was prophesied that the ‘Spirit of Elijah’ (manifest in John the Baptist) would come to restore people’s spiritual interest in the Messiah and to prepare the way for His coming. (Matt 17v10-13).  In the further fulfillment of this prophecy, before Jesus’ second coming, likewise the ‘Spirit of Elijah’ will restore the Church and also the interest of ordinary people in the Messiah, Jesus, preparing the way for His coming again. May we and our churches be walking in the Spirit, and therefore not miss out on what God is doing!

5. Guidance

We all value being guided by God over decisions and our daily walk. Also, our heavenly Father loves to lead us by His Spirit into the truth of what He is saying to us, Here is a short encouragement to make sure we are on the right lines when we have a ‘need of the hour‘. Here are some questions to ask yourself:

Will it further my service to God? Will it honour God? Is it Christ-like? Is there  something in the word to guide me, or is it contrary to God’s word? Have I the confirmation of Godly leaders? Is there a door open? Do I have the witness of the Spirit’s inner peace? Am I willing to obey God?  When these things line up with a sense of unity and cohesion, you can reckon that God is leading you in the way you should go. If not, think again.

I heard a short talk on the radio about hearing God, which fitted in with this.

As we listen, God will say to us in some form or other, ‘I will always love you.’ Remember that sin gets in the way, so be sure to confess and receive cleansing. Adore Him. Give time to Him. Wait before Him and listen….His silence. Check your motives before Him. Whatever the issue, God does not has to do it your way….He is God.

From my family and I, GOD BLESS YOU ALL !         David, Jackie and Jo-anna.

1. Family

It wasn’t long since the last ‘Hatikvah’ before Christmas, so not too much to say about family matters….though make no mistake, family does matter! My mother is struggling at times, now aged 88 and still able to live on her own, though with lots of family and other support. We go over every Thursday to her home, about 28 miles away. She has been a widow for 8 years, and the bible has lots to say about caring for widows and orphans.  My wife's parents and brother have all died, as has my Dad…..the generations move on, cyclically. Our daughter is thriving at Bible College, My wife and I are close with one another, pray a lot together, and are enjoying the stimulation of the 40 day prayer and fasting season at our church. We may be taking on another role at the church soon. If you have a family, give them time, make them feel special, do things together. Remember what the Bible teaches: Husbands, love your wives - they need to know you do, and wives, respect and honour your husbands - they need to know you do. (Ephesians. 5v33)

2. Conference: ‘Breaking Thru the Wall of Partition’

Following on from last edition of ‘Hatikvah’ which included a good deal of teaching over Israel, have a look at just one of many statements in the Bible which makes it clear that God has a special relationship with Israel.

1 Chron 17:20-22      20 "There is no-one like you, O Lord, and there is no God but you, as we have heard with our own ears. 21 And who is like your people Israel—the one nation on earth whose God went out to redeem a people for himself, and to make a name for yourself, and to perform great and awesome wonders by driving out nations from before your people, whom you redeemed from Egypt? 22 You made your people Israel your very own for ever, and you, O Lord, have become their God.

In like manner, God has redeemed believers in Jesus out of all the nations to be a people for Himself - we are called the Church. Though the people of Israel are chosen as God’s people, and were redeemed from Egypt, they too need to be redeemed from the slavery to sin and become believers.

God’s plan is to make ’one new man’, both Jewish and Gentile believers in Jesus, thus completing His Church. This is why we stand with and pray for Israel and the ‘Body of Messiah‘ in Israel, the Jewish and Arab believers in Christ who live and witness there.

One New Man….Last summer, family & youth conferences took place in the West Bank area of Israel. Also many children from Arab Christian and Jewish Messianic backgrounds attended King’s Kids summer camps. Pray that their continuing street performances act as a powerful testimony to the public, and that seeds sown will bear fruit for the Kingdom.

CONFERENCE:  Our own church held a special one day conference last November demonstrating the ‘One New Man in Christ’  principle - a first, we believe, in Britain. The two speakers were a Jewish pastor and a Palestinian pastor, both leading churches Israel. Stories of amazing reconciliation were shared, and of God’s workings in each speaker’s heart to enable a reaching out with forgiveness and peace to ’the other side’. This was difficult for these believers because their respective communities and close relatives had all experienced the awfulness of enmity and war, with some losing loved ones. Yet God has brought forth a clear demonstration of one-ness in Christ, the way of peace, found only though Him.

3.  2011 heralded in with 40 days of Fasting and Prayer

Our Church, along with another church in our town, and with many others across the nation heralded in the year 2011 by conducting a 40 day period of prayer and fasting. This is a delight to me, certainly at my own church, where everyone is missing at least a meal a day, some fasting from media entertainment or other favourites, and where Tuesday is a full fast. The time spent normally at meals is used instead to pray, so Tuesday involves prayer at 6am, 8am, 1pm and 7.30pm. Glory to God!  Initially, the prayer has been focused on us as individuals and as a body, that we would draw near to God, and devote ourselves to Him, enjoy His presence and give Him the worship (worth-ship) He deserves. Also that God would cleanse and refine us, purifying our lives to be holy vessels for His highest purposes.

We desire to see renewal and transformation not only in our own church, but in the whole true church in Britain. This leads us to pray for the nation, that the overflow of what God does in our lives and the Church, affects our communities and nation to bring restoration and transformation. I would commend you to consider such a period of fasting and prayer for your own church, and to speak to your leaders about this.

4. Prophetic Talk: the year 2011(Dec 6th 2010, Wembley)

In 2007 the Lord called me to think about fasting with prayer. He called me to write a pamphlet, and as I asked people, and even talked to Bishops about fasting, they said nobody will know what you’re talking about! So I wrote, what I call “a user friendly” pamphlet that I could give out to encourage people to pick up an old way, a neglected discipline that we should just be doing normally.  I want you to bear in mind that, under-girding all this, is I believe, that the Lord is going to bring renewal and revival, but it’s not coming quite as I thought.

In August, at New Wine, the Lord gave me a vivid picture. I saw the Lord standing with a belt round His waist and sword hanging from that belt.   He took the sword with His right hand and with His left hand He wiped the blade, and as He wiped the blade, spontaneously the sword became sharp and shining and ready for use.

About a month later I was reading Ezekiel 21 verse 1 and there you will find that whole vision explained. The sword has been drawn and it is a warning of God’s judgement and the judgement is upon us the church. It is upon the Nation, of course, as well, but we’re meant to be the light. I struggled with that and said “Lord, how…I was expecting this wonderful wave of revival to come and now you’re going to tell me we’ve got to face judgement.”

He said “Yes, judgement and renewal will come together. The two will come in a moment of time.” As I was querying this, and arguing this almost, with the Lord, He said, “look at John’s description of my Son in Revelation.” If you look in Revelation chapter 1, and John’s description in verses 15 and 16 of our Lord, in verse 15 it says “His voice was like the sound of rushing water,” in other words a wave of renewal, and out of His mouth, in verse 16, came a sharp double edged sword. So from the same place in our Lord comes both renewal and judgement.

I started praying about this and I went up onto the highest point in my area, a place called Dunkery Beacon, and you can see for miles from the south west and I stood up there and prayed through 360 degrees. I was quite pleased with my prayer that morning until I stopped and the Lord said, “You’ve forgotten one thing”. I said,“Oh no, what’s that?”  He said “You’ve forgotten to cry out for mercy.”

It seems to me that mercy is a trigger to attract the Lord’s attention. You know the two blind men didn’t say, ‘Lord heal me’, they said, “Son of David have mercy”, and once they cried for mercy then there was a response. In Habakkuk 3 they did the same thing.  In Habakkuk’s prayer, it says “Lord I’ve heard of your fame, I stand in awe of your deeds, renew them in our day and in our time make them known, and in wrath remember mercy.”

So I found myself talking at New Wine in 2009 on Renewal and Judgement, and the Lord said “the Church needs to regain five things. The first thing is we need WATCHMEN. The second is we need to SEEK HOLINESS.

The third is to CRY OUT FOR MERCY. The fourth is to EXERCISE & ENCOURAGE THE PROPHETIC, and the fifth is to RAISE UP WARRIORS to take up the land for God.”

At the end the lion roared! I can’t explain to you this......Aslan  (the lion)  was going round the site ...in my mind, and when we came to the end of the talk, people started roaring like lions, and people were painting lions, and all sorts of things. Then I was drawn to Amos 3 verse 7 & 8, which I’ve already quoted, “Surely the Sovereign Lord does nothing without revealing His plans to His servants the Prophets. The lion has roared, who will not fear, the Sovereign Lord has spoken who can but prophecy.”

So there was urgency beginning here for me about proclaiming the Word of God in power, and at the same time I met with my renewal group support team and said that we need to call a Holy Fast. I don’t even know what that means! It’s what Joel calls for, and I don’t know what it looks like, but what I’m talking about is in Joel 2 “blow the Holy trumpet call a Holy Fast”.

I saw my local Bishop and persuaded him to allow me to promote prayer and fasting, and also, that was the year that the Lord showed me that 2011 would be a pivotal year. Now in 2010 the lion was still roaring. In the City of Bath there are a hundred lions, it’s an art display, everywhere you walk through the City of Bath, which is my nearest city, there are 100 lions. I felt God was just saying, “Wake up, oh sleeper”. You know this is the call to the church, Ephesians 5,“Wake up, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine upon you”. The battle is at the gate, Isaiah 28 verse 6.  So in that year of 2010, last August, this August even! I spoke on raising the dead, the call of the prophet. That is the physically dead, the dead church, dead nations, and so on. At the end of that you will see in Revelation there’s an angel straddling the earth and the sea, and he shouts out loudly with the roar of a lion, and in verse 11 of Revelation 10 it says: “you must prophecy again about many peoples, nations, languages and Kings.” In other words, it’s gone from (prophesying) a severe warning to a critical warning about prophesying.

In this October, in France, I had taken a week off, and a bit like Ian, I was just half way through the week, and said Lord “if you want to speak to me that would be great.” I was hoping He might speak to me in my sleep as He often speaks to me in that way, but at six o’clock I woke up and He gave me this heading, ‘Battle for Britain 2011-Call a Holy Fast- Blow the Trumpet’. This was all the download regarding the battle. The battle has moved from ground level to air level. Now this battle is in the heavenly realms and will need heavenly weaponry. It’s a pivotal moment and just like the Battle of Britain, we need spiritual radar stations around the coast, we need watchmen around the coast, we need many new prayer fields rather than airfields. The generation that fought that Battle of Britain is now dying out, it’s time for a new generation to rise up, and so there’s a great focus on young people.

I believe the Lord is going to swoop down, as it were, upon our young people and we need to prepare the way for them. I believe that the enemy spirit over Europe that has led to the 1st and 2nd World War is still perusing this domination over the EU, and these new young warriors will use weapons that the last generation didn’t use or understand. It will be like David coming along and refusing Saul’s armour and saying, ‘No, the Lord has prepared me in His own way.’ I think we’ll be amazed by how the Lord has been preparing young people in His own way, and we need to stand back and encourage and release them.

What do we need, we need collective and national fasting; persistent and united prayer wielding the Sword of the Spirit; exercising the supernatural gifts of the Spirit, and public led worship and praise, by that I mean outside of our buildings. We need to get out, and it should be the praise and worship that leads God’s people into dark places. The battle to be fought in groups, this isn’t a one off, this is team work, squadrons with experienced leaders, each member prayerfully protecting the others in the group; and in a way, like Joshua had to take the land, he needed boldness. We need to fight for this revival and renewal I believe, to see it come to pass. Just a few men and women of faith and you can change the history of the nation, just to stand in the gap to be salt to be light. And what was that quote for the Battle of Britain. “Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.” God is just looking for the few righteous people now. It’s a Godly principle.

In Ezekiel, if you remember, it says “I looked for a man who will build up the wall and stand before me in the gap and I found no one”. Pray God that He does find people, and this thing about standing, standing, standing............

In Ephesians 6 verse 10, I thought the most common word was to pray, ‘pray’ is mentioned four times, but ‘standing’ is also mentioned four times. We’ve got to stand! A friend of mine had a picture of dominoes, you know the domino effect they keep talking about it in European countries; they fall down, this domino effect. You just need one person to stand at right angles and it’ll stop it. So we’ve got to stand.  Abraham, if you remember, pleaded with God, “If you find just ten righteous people among that whole city........” God is just looking for a few.

So how do we fight for this nation for God? Well, according to Joel we blow the trumpet and we declare a holy fast, which is where I’m so grateful to Ian for calling this meeting. Down in Somerset I don’t have many networks to spread this word so I’m very grateful to him. So, declare a holy fast, call a sacred assembly, summon the elders and all who live in the land to the house of the Lord, and cry out to the Lord, and call for a national prayer and fast, and blow the trumpet. This prayer and fasting is so elemental in the Old Testament. Nehemiah did it when he heard of the situation. Daniel does it; Jehoshaphat does it, Ezra, Esther, even in Nineveh, a Gentile country. You know, Jonah didn’t want to see them saved, but in the end they responded to the Word of God.

I believe we are in a period (in summarising what I’m saying), in Isaiah 58 through to 61. Chapter 58 is a call to come back to a true relationship with the Lord, true fasting; Chapter 59 warns us about the reality of the situation we’re in. Chapter 60 summarised, calls us to repentance and in Chapter 61, we see a season of the Lord’s favour coming, and we have got to respond, back in chapter 58, before we’re going to see what the Lord is going to do and bless us with. So renewal is coming, but we have to fight for it. There is a pent up flood coming (Isaiah 59 verse 19). There’s a cleansing wave coming I believe, a holy wave of purification.

Just before I came here, during the week, the Lord showed me in a dream; He asked me to stand in a place, he’s put me on a little bank, and below where I live is below sea level, so if a big wave is coming I hope I have time to build a boat! There is a wave coming and He says, ‘stand, stand on this small boat’, and I see this wave coming and it’s not the wave I anticipated; it’s not this majestic beautiful white wave; it’s a dirty messy mucky wave. It’s quite low, but it’s quite powerful, and it’s just coming with old tyres, debris in it. I’m standing there and the Lord is saying, ‘you’ve got to stand’.  It hits me and blows me off my feet, and I think this is it, and don’t know where I’m going to end up, and I put my feet down and I’m still standing. What I felt the Lord was saying was if a holy wave, a wave of purity, is coming it cannot abide the filth, the sin and, therefore, it will have to be washed ahead and out in front of it. So we need to be ready for that, and we need to be ascending the holy hill. Psalm 24, I think, is a Psalm of the moment. I won’t go into any more detail about that.

Let me just summarise: The Lord has said what a pivotal moment, that means it could go one way or the other. We need to sound the trumpet. It’s a battle for Britain and it will be fought in heavenly realms with spiritual weapons. It’s pivotal because the UK is pivotal. I believe this wave, as it comes and renews and refreshes us, will then wash out again to the ends of the earth. That’s my personal view. The young people are crucial, because God is going to jump several generations, and they will lead people both below them and above them in age back to the Lord. It only takes a few to stand in the gap, just a few righteous people to cry out for mercy, for God to bless a nation, we need to be overcomers. We need to be passionate and fervent about this.

Why, in the seven letters in Revelation to the church does it end by saying “those who overcome”? Presumably, because we’ve got to overcome something to reach this blessing. So be overcomers, and we will see the Lord’s Glory in this land, and the church will be renewed I believe, and the country will be revived ready for God’s purposes for the ends of the earth for the word to go out. So pray and fast, cry out for mercy, get as close as you can to the Lord because he’s our refuge and stronghold. Amen.

5. END TIMES EMERGING.

(This is repeated from a previous edition, & in harmony with the whole theme of this edition. Ed.)

The advance of ungodliness and lawlessness - defying the instruction of Gods law - is disturbing. Trouble deepens around the world. China and the USA stand opposed, Iran persists in its pursuit of the nuclear bomb, with the USA deploying nuclear carriers to the Gulf in response. The Islamic world surrounds embattled Israel in increasing hostility. Social tensions in Europe increase with debt mountains having to be faced. Pakistan unites the whole Islamic world in anti- Western nations attitudes. A world of peace and prosperity looks unlikely.

What is more, biblically, things are likely to get worse, leading to the man of lawlessness being revealed. Meanwhile, the Body of Christ arises in greater fullness as a testimony to Christ worldwide, and in Britain, the new government seems to have a more honourable agenda towards marriage, family and a society which encourages and values the voluntary sector, including the Church and its activity in the nation. The darkness darkens, and the light brightens.

God speaks through events such as the Icelandic dust cloud (Deut 28v24) - a call for repentance. The Gulf of Mexico oil spill has soured US - British relationships with increasing anti-British rhetoric from the Obama administration. The Cumbria  massacre shook the West. Since then, hurricanes and floods have continued to shake man’s confidence in himself. Biblically, such events are 'signs', capturing widespread attention and having a human or divine origin. Such signs need interpretation, just as Jesus interpreted the falling of the Tower of Siloam disaster,  in His own time, by saying that it was a warning that something was wrong in the city of Jerusalem, and unless there was repentance, they would all suffer. Less than a generation later, most of the inhabitants were slaughtered in a fruitless revolt against Rome. The 'sign' and its interpretation were ignored.

Isaiah 26:9-11:   When your judgments come upon the earth, the people of the world learn righteousness. Though grace is shown to the wicked, they do not learn righteousness; even in a land of uprightness they go on doing evil and regard not the majesty of the Lord. O Lord, your hand is lifted high, but they do not see it.

In His mercy, God allows mild signs of warning to bring people to salvation, but more severe disasters to lead them - even whole nations - to the recognition that something is wrong, and to repentance - a change of direction to the good. This allows God to transform the situation and restore blessing. As we well know in these End Times, human greed, hatred and violence are coming to the fore amongst the nations. Therefore God is 'shaking the nations', in a world now divided into warring camps armed with fearful weapons of mass destruction (Haggai 2v6-, Hebrews 12v26ff. Unless there is recognition of the signs, and repentance, we are heading towards catastrophic  desolation. The international war and events of Ezekiel chapters 38 & 39, and Israels deliverance Zechariah chapters 12 - 14 may be closer than we think. Whatever the timescale may be, events involving, linked with, or in neighbouring lands to Israel are key pointers..

The unrestrained spirits of violence and hatred around the world will bring us to destruction unless there is a recognition of the warning signs - through interpretation of their meaning - to Governments, and then a heeding. In the Western civilisation, secularisation has destroyed the God consciousness of the people, and stripped them of the ability to understand the signs of the times. God is calling his people to sound the alarm, to act as prophetic people interpreting His word to those around us - family, neighbourhood and workplace, and to those in higher authority in our nations.

We still have opportunities. When the church prays as one, rising up to the challenge, those around us and those in authority will have their perception enhanced, and will seek for a way forward. Will the church be there to share with them 'the word of the Lord' ?  Incidentally, I heard on Premier Radio recently a talk with a prophetic element, the main points of which I have summarised as follows:

a. The crucible test is coming to an end. Next is the move of God.

b. The process involves the removal of dirty garments (cf. Joshua the high priest).

We will know who we are - His Church - Royalty.

c. Grace will be given to stand and to know where God has called you.

d. There will be a release of continual supply. A crowning and release of a move of God.

We will help others in their prayer lives. The prayer level will go up. NB The national media is a priority for our prayers!

6. The Coming War in the Middle East

President Obama is taking the pressure off Iran who will soon have nuclear capability. The United Emirates Ambassador to the USA has gone public,  stating that the Arab States of the Persian Gulf would support military strikes against Iran’s nuclear facilities, in fear of the development of a nuclear Iran. He said that if the USA fails to prevent Iran’s nuclear plans, the UAE would abandon their alliances with the USA and appease Iran. He does not believe a nuclear Iran can be contained. A former CIA spy also spoke at the Washington Institute, asserting that an Iranian nuclear arsenal would be used to attack Israel, the Gulf States and Europe.

The President of Iran has never rescinded his intention to obliterate ’the Zionist entity’. Hizbullah is battle-ready in Lebanon, with an apparent arsenal of over 40,000 rockets capable of reaching almost any part of Israel. Hamas is heavily re-armed in Gaza. Things are looking bleak for Israel. However, with God, all things are possible. Look at King Jehoshaphat’s attitude on being surrounded by enemies: ( see the passage in 2 Chronicles 20v1-15)

‘He…proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah….in Your hand is there not power and might so that no-one is able to withstand You?…You will hear and save.’

This is what the Lord says to you: 'Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God's.’

Pray that God would open the eyes of the Jewish people to this great truth in the Book of Chronicles, and that He would send godly advice and advisors to the leaders of Israel….’for such a time as this’.

7. The Coming World System

[Gary Kah gave a talk with this title, the key points of which I have summarised here. Ed.]

(Gary Kah is the former Europe & Middle East Trade Specialist for the Indiana government. While in that position he travelled extensively overseas working closely with the economic staff at American Embassies on trade-related projects. During that time, he learned of efforts underway to establish a one-world political/financial system. He also discovered there was a religious motivation connected with these developments. His website is: www.garykah.org

Gary has written two best-selling books detailing his experiences and explaining the goals of the one-world/interfaith movement. His books, En Route to Global Occupation and The New World Religion, are fully documented and are critical in understanding today's global developments - including the current financial crisis.)

Gary began with information from the year 2009 in the USA, and expanded world-wide. Bible passages are for reading and study. In the first Bible passage below, the ’Dragon’ is Satan, and the description unfolds a one -world system.

Revelation 13v2-9:  2 The beast I saw resembled a leopard, but had feet like those of a bear and a mouth like that of a lion. The dragon gave the beast his power and his throne and great authority. 3 One of the heads of the beast seemed to have had a fatal wound, but the fatal wound had been healed. The whole world was astonished and followed the beast. 4 Men worshipped the dragon because he had given authority to the beast, and they also worshipped the beast and asked, "Who is like the beast? Who can make war against him?"

5 The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies and to exercise his authority for forty-two months. 6 He opened his mouth to blaspheme God, and to slander his name and his dwelling-place and those who live in heaven. 7 He was given power to make war against the saints and to conquer them. And he was given authority over every tribe, people, language and nation. 8 All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast—all whose names have not been written in the book of life belonging to the Lamb that was slain from the creation of the world. 9 He who has an ear, let him hear.

So, let’s start with some current facts:

USA & Debt:   One in nine homes are empty in the USA. There is no building programme. 30% negative equity. 16.8% unemployment. President Obama is badly overspending, USA debt $65.5 Trillion.

World finance: President Obama wants to replace the dollar with a world currency. A ‘Super-State’ of Canada, USA and Mexico is planned, similar to the EU, and a Global Economic Union is being formed through the G20 nations. The Financial Economic Forum is forming in Europe.

Sovereignty: In this planned system, national sovereignties will cease. An international system for laws is to come. The USA & other nations’ freedoms are being lost. President Obama has declared that he wants to be a ‘citizen of the world‘. (He is also pro-abortion and pro homosexuality). An Inter-Parliamentary Union has been formed through the United Nations. This is moving towards a one - world parliament. The State of the World Forum is meeting with many world leaders, declaring that there is a need for one - world government to deal with world problems.

NB: End times prophecies may cause people in the USA to stockpile food/arms.

Catholicism & World Religions: The present Pope supports One World Government. The Speaker of our House of Commons and many others there have become RC. Tony Blair has said, ’I want to unite world religions.’ He has formed a faith foundation to unite all religions. Leaders of all religions have already joined the board, including Charismatic Evangelical Christian leaders! The World Council of Churches is involved. Subjects such as ’Building an inter-faith community’, ’World citizenship’ (New Age), ‘A Parliament of World Religions’, are on the agenda. Former Pope John Paul was involved with inter-faith and even occult ceremonies. The RC church is linked to Eastern religions, and wants to join with Protestants and then other religions.

-----------------------------------------------------

[Author’s note: I have included my own comments about the Pope’s visit to Britain here, in parentheses. The visit appears to have been a great success. Pastoral concern for his flock, including the addressing of the issue of child abuse, a humble attitude, good teaching, caring prayers, and his conduct of sacramental services, has won over many. His address to MPs and the nation concerning moral values and our drift from our Christian roots has challenged many. For this we give thanks! However, though the Pope has allayed some of the concerns about child abuse by priests, the real issues still need to be addressed. The plain fact is that the Bible does not forbid marriage for priests. The Bible actually teaches that believers in Jesus are all classified as 'priests', ministering to God in worship, love and service, and to others in acts of love and service.

The fact that the Roman Catholic Church forbids their 'priests' to be married, even though many struggle with this, means that temptation comes in other ways, which need not be the case if marriage were permitted. It would be good if those set aside for full time service to God were given the choice! Thankfully the Protestant Church does not forbid marriage, in line with the bible's teaching. Also, there are fundamental issues at stake.

No doubt the Pope wished to draw in the faithful, encourage others to become Catholics, and woo the Protestant Church in Britain. Historically, there are very serious issues which divide the Protestant Church from the Catholic Church. It would be good to look briefly at a few issues here, so you can understand why the Protestants broke away from the Catholic Church.

1. Protestants believe the Gospel message that faith in Jesus alone is the necessary requirement for a person to be 'saved', i.e. to be cleansed from sin and able to relate to God in a real and vibrant relationship of child to parent. The teaching emphasis is on the truths of the Scriptures, the Bible.

The Catholic Church puts as much emphasis on teaching the sacraments as the Scriptures, and maintains that a person is saved by their 'works' in this life, and their performance in terms of sacraments, acts of devotion....being good Catholics....as much as in their faith in Jesus. It is a gospel of Jesus plus..... rather than Jesus alone. The Apostle Paul, leader of the Gentile Church stood strongly against this tendency in the Early Church, as did the Apostle Peter, the leader of the Early Jewish Church. Martin Luther did the same at the time of the Reformation, when the break from Rome developed.

Biblically, the only requirement for you to be forgiven and enter into a relationship with the living God, is to simply believe the Gospel....that Jesus came from God, and is God...the Son, lived perfectly as a man, showing us what God is truly like, and died as a willing sacrifice for the sins of the whole world, for every human being who had lived, lived in his time, and who would ever live in the future.

On the basis of a perfect human being dying in your place, your sinful nature, your rebellion and independence from God, your tendency to do, say or think what is wrong in God's sight, can be forgiven. God accepts you because Jesus took your just punishment into Himself at the Cross. Because of His love for you, He died in your place for your sin. He took your punishment, your guilt. Therefore God accepts you as clean and perfect in His sight as you believe this message, called the 'Gospel', and choose to enter into a relationship with God. This is the true Gospel....the good news of salvation through Jesus, The Christ.

2. There are a number of other issues, of somewhat lesser significance, but nevertheless important. Particularly the emphasis on Mary, who is elevated in the Catholic Church to almost divine status, though she was thoroughly human and subject to sin. Also the practice of obtaining 'indulgences' as part of the earning favour towards salvation, troubles the Protestants. Some of the other issues: The infallibility of the Pope....even the Apostle Peter, often considered to be the first 'pope', was publicly corrected by Paul! The multiplicity of icons and images....'thou shalt make no graven images'. There is no mention of 'purgatory' in the Scriptures.

Finally, I see both good and not so good in the Pope's visit. Good in that he challenged Britain to return to its spiritual roots, but not so good in that his visit could be one means by which the way is paved towards a one world religion. Tony Blair wishes to see and is working towards such a religion, which would incorporate all religions and 'faiths', which the Bible predicts as happening in the 'End Times'.

The Pope is reaching out to other 'faiths' in terms of inclusivism, whereas Biblical faith in Jesus is absolutely exclusive in its message. No other way, no religion, no faith other than by faith in the sacrifice of Christ is acceptable to God. Only belief in His Son's death and resurrection to the right hand of God the Father, by the Holy Spirit's power, is enough. Perhaps now you see why not everyone is rejoicing over all aspects of the Pope's visit.....Be discerning.]

New Age: This is based on Eastern religions. Pantheism means all embracing…I.e. all roads lead to God. Trance-like meditation is dangerous. NB. The bible forbids the occult: Deuteronomy 18v10-12; Leviticus 19v26-31. New Age has a belief in re-incarnation. Freemasonry also involves the occult. (Apparently the World Council of Churches is ‘full’ of freemasons!)

Islam: There is a big increase in Islamic sharia banks in Europe, and this is  approved by the Vatican. (Islamic banks must adhere to sharia law). President Obama is getting more muslims into the White House. They take the Oath on the Koran. Islam’s aim is to take over all religions and governments. President Obama told a legal head: ’No to Jesus--Yes to Allah’. For example, in Indiana, no Christian prayers made to ‘Jesus’ are acceptable. But prayers to ‘Allah’ are OK. President Obama says the USA will support Islam.     Israel: President Obama is taking the pressure off Iran who will soon have nuclear capability. Israel, first in line for nuclear attack from Iran, may have to attack Iran to prevent this.

[Note: You may remember a nuclear deterrent practice, in the form of a raid, was held by the Israelis re Iran. A message was given to the nations as to Israel’s attitude towards the development of a nuclear Iran. Also, the ‘Samson Project‘, an Israeli nuclear plan, has the principle of taking all rather than yielding-compare the suicides at Masada.Things are serious. Ed.]

Jerusalem: Ezekiel 5v5:  "This is what the Sovereign Lord says: This is Jerusalem, which I have set in the centre of the nations, with countries all around her.’

President Obama will enable Palestinians to get what they want. He wants a two-state system in Israel/Palestine. His cousin, Odinga, is Prime Minister of Kenya and the no.1. Islamic leader there, and very powerful. He talks with the president of Iran about a two-state system in Israel /Palestine. Meanwhile, President Obama also wants the UN flag to fly over the Western Wall in Jerusalem. He, the Pope and Tony Blair all call for a two-state solution in Israel.

The Catholic Church owns much of Jerusalem. The RC’s want unity of Islam, Jews & Christianity in Jerusalem, making it the centre of a unified religion with a new temple. Both Islam and the Jews want the temple - an abomination to God, because the world-wide body of true believers in Jesus are His living temple. NB. Many American Jews from the USA are expected to return to Israel. Routes are already arranged. The enemy is trying to take out such ministries who are in support of Israel and the Jews. Take time to pray for embattled leaders.

[Editor’s comment:  I find a real witness to Gary Kah’s teaching and information, and am no stranger to much of this. As Bible-believing Christians, we are going to have to stand for the truth against the lies and the deceptions of the enemy, who will work through people and systems - even through traditional Christian religion. I was particularly interested in the final comments about the expectation of American Jews to return to Israel. This fits in very well with the work we are doing in Cyprus, preparing the way for Jews ’from the West’ to return to Israel in a flood. We believe that ‘safe havens’ and stage posts will be needed at the time, hence our route.]

Isaiah 11:11-12  In that day the Lord will reach out his hand a second time to reclaim the remnant that is left of his people... ‘He will raise a banner for the nations and gather the exiles of Israel; he will assemble the scattered people of Judah from the four quarters of the earth.’

Isaiah 43v1, 5&6:  1 But now, this is what the Lord says— he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: "Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine…… 5 Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bring your children from the east and gather you from the west. 6 I will say to the north, 'Give them up!' and to the south, 'Do not hold them back.' Bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the ends of the earth…..

Is 14v1-2: The Lord will have compassion on Jacob; once again he will choose Israel and will settle them in their own land. Aliens (lit: ‘Strangers’) will join them and unite with the house of Jacob. Nations will take them and bring them to their own place.

For further Bible Reading: Matthew 24v3-5, 21-25; (Matt 24, Mark 13 & Luke 21 all make good background reading); Daniel 12v3-4; 2 Cor 6v14-18. 1 Tim 4v1-2; 2 Tim 3v1-4 & 4v3-4; James 1v12; Revelation 13 & 14.

8. Islamicisation

This information is gathered from a Revelation TV interview with Nonie Darwish (www.arabsforisrael.com).

There are 1.2 Billion Muslims. World domination is their agenda, and this is not a secret. The strategy is to plead for visas to come to other nations, and then, having settled and multiplied, a creeping process of Islamicisation. They begin to demand rights in the host nation,  and to allow their Muslim practices…..for example, the establishment of sharia law. There is a gradual spread of mosques and then the amplified ‘call to prayer‘, which is a form of brainwashing!  (NB church bells may sound loud to locals, but the music is neutral and not with words. 52 Muslim countries are not open to other religions being taught or embraced, and there are no studies at their colleges and universities of other religions. Each is a one party state with Allah's law....Sharia law. This has a spiritual root....satan's deception.

The West is in a spiritual vacuum, having cast off Christianity. Thus people‘s minds are open

to anything, and are looking for something to live for. Jihad....dying for Islam....has promoted   terrorism. This brings FEAR to West. The 9/11 event still makes people shudder. There is also a fear of Muslims cutting off the West’s supply of oil, and so some appeasement.

Saddam Hussein's  oppressive regime in Iraq, a reign of terror, allowed the rape of women, the cutting out of tongues, etc. US involvement brought the opportunity for real democracy, but the hatred and indoctrination in the Iraqis meant it was not valued. The Palestinians are kept as pawns in the Middle East. There are plenty of rich Muslim nations to provide for them, but they do not, in order to keep the political use of Palestinians against Israel.

To Islam. the Jews are the scapegoats. The religion exhibits hatred not love towards those which they regard as enemies, especially for Jews and for Christians….unlike Christianity, which teaches us to love our enemies.

The Koran allows them to lie about their enemies. Adherents are taught that they will  go to heaven if they kill Jews and Christians, whom they fear. They also teach that the Christians worship three Gods rather than the Tri-une God of the Bible. A convert to Christianity is regarded as an ‘infidel’, and faces the death penalty. The religion allows no freedom, especially for women. Muslim women can only gain respect if they show themselves more radical than the men, such as mothers of jihad suicides. It is a religion which uses fear and domination to control people.

The one they worship, ‘Allah’, is not like ‘Yahweh‘, the God of the Bible. Allah promotes hatred, fear, domination, revenge. It is vindictive, having no love. Yahweh reveals towards mankind the place of forgiveness, mercy, love, and acceptance. This includes love for others, even enemies.

Judaism is similar in many ways to Christianity…..our Jewish roots. We worship the same God, though the Jews do not yet have the revelation of Jesus as the son of God, and as God the Son. The character of Christians, exhibiting love, forgiveness, mercy and grace witnesses to many Muslims. Some recognise the difference to their own religion, and begin to desire the God of the Christians, and to find true peace with God and in their lives. However, the cost of becoming a Christian can be very high, with exclusion from the family, beatings and even death following.

9. End Times Events

Jesus spoke of the End Times being characterised by natural disasters:

Luke 21v7-11:    "Teacher," they asked, "when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?"  He replied: "Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am he,' and 'The time is near.' Do not follow them.  When you hear of wars and revolutions, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away."  Then he said to them: "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.  There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.

From the following passages, we know that God brings disasters upon the earth in some way…these passages speak of God creating disaster, bringing disaster, planning disaster, etc. But what does this mean?

It is interesting that in the New Testament, the Testament of Grace, the word ’disaster’ does not appear. Let’s look at some OT passages first.

Isaiah 45v6-7:  I am the Lord, and there is no other.  I form the light and create darkness, I bring prosperity and create disaster; I, the Lord, do all these things.

Jeremiah 4v5-6 :   "Announce in Judah and proclaim in Jerusalem and say: 'Sound the trumpet throughout the land!' Cry aloud and say: 'Gather together! Let us flee to the fortified cities!' 6 Raise the signal to go to Zion! Flee for safety without delay! For I am bringing disaster from the north, even terrible destruction."

Micah 1v12: Those who live in Maroth writhe in pain, waiting for relief, because disaster has come from the Lord, even to the gate of Jerusalem.

Micah 2v1-3:   Woe to those who plan iniquity, to those who plot evil on their beds! At morning's light they carry it out because it is in their power to do it. They covet fields and seize them, and houses, and take them. They defraud a man of his home, a fellow-man of his inheritance.  Therefore, the Lord says:   "I am planning disaster against this people, from which you cannot save yourselves. You will no longer walk proudly, for it will be a time of calamity.

We know that the revelation of who God is had been progressive throughout the OT, culminating in and embodied in the person of Christ in the NT. Perhaps all the references to disaster sent from God are just an imperfect revelation of who God is to that point? However, perhaps there is another truth. God is Judge of all the earth. We know from the book of Revelation that God’s judgments will be severe in the End Times:

Rev 9:1-6:  The fifth angel sounded his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from the sky to the earth. The star was given the key to the shaft of the Abyss. 2 When he opened the Abyss, smoke rose from it like the smoke from a gigantic furnace. The sun and sky were darkened by the smoke from the Abyss. 3 And out of the smoke locusts came down upon the earth and were given power like that of scorpions of the earth. 4 They were told not to harm the grass of the earth or any plant or tree, but only those people who did not have the seal of God on their foreheads. 5 They were not given power to kill them, but only to torture them for five months. And the agony they suffered was like that of the sting of a scorpion when it strikes a man.6 During those days men will seek death, but will not find it; they will long to die, but death will elude them.

Rev 9:18-21:   A third of mankind was killed by the three plagues of fire, smoke and sulphur that came out of their mouths. 19 The power of the horses was in their mouths and in their tails; for their tails were like snakes, having heads with which they inflict injury. 20 The rest of mankind that were not killed by these plagues still did not repent of the work of their hands; they did not stop worshipping demons, and idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone and wood—idols that cannot see or hear or walk. 21 Nor did they repent of their murders, their magic arts, their sexual immorality or their thefts.

The God of the OT and the God of the NT are not different. No, but we see Jesus heralding a period of grace, to give mankind time to repent and turn to God for salvation. For those who do not heed the warnings, they bring upon themselves terrible divine judgment. That then, is one reason for disaster…what people bring on themselves because they refuse to repent of evil ways. Another can be found in the book of Job, where God allows the enemy to work, in order that God’s purposes be fulfilled, working character and allowing lessons about who God is and His own character to be learned.

Job 1v6-12:   (Job's First Test)

One day the angels came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came with them.  The Lord said to Satan, "Where have you come from?" Satan answered the Lord, "From roaming through the earth and going to and fro in it."  Then the Lord said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job? There is no-one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil."  "Does Job fear God for nothing?" Satan replied. 10 "Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land.  But stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face."  The Lord said to Satan, "Very well, then, everything he has is in your hands, but on the man himself do not lay a finger." Then Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.

The fact is that God reveals Himself as full of grace, love and kindness, yet also the Judge of all the earth. There are many facets to His character. So, does this mean God sent the 9/11, the Haiti Tsunami, Pakistan’s floods? The answer could well be ’yes’, and ’no’. ‘Yes’, in that He is allowing mankind to reap the folly of its own sin and rebellion. Look at this verse:

Isaiah 24:18-20:  The floodgates of the heavens are opened, the foundations of the earth shake. 19 The earth is broken up, the earth is split asunder, the earth is thoroughly shaken. 20 The earth reels like a drunkard, it sways like a hut in the wind; so heavy upon it is the guilt of its rebellion that it falls—never to rise again.

‘Yes’ that He may be allowing the enemy a hand in the affairs of the earth for a purpose. ’No’ in that He is not vindictive, but only allows what can be used in His overall design in bringing people to Himself, and rescuing them from themselves and from Satan’s kingdom into the salvation found in Christ. This is God’s mercy! Many people found Christ in Haiti. Many Christians were inexplicably prevented from going to the twin towers on 9/11. Many Christian organisations are bearing the witness to Christ in their humanitarian rescue and provision work in Pakistan, as well as witnessing to Christ. God watches over His own.

Man’s sin and Satan’s rebellion are the real causes of disaster. The Garden of Eden was perfect until Satan tempted, and man rebelled. Satan is the real evil one! He desires to destroy all mankind and take them to hell with him and his demons, where he knows he is ultimately bound.  Praise God that He sometimes, in His mercy and providence, allows things to happen which shakes mankind up, and causes mankind to seek Him. Praise God that He is the ultimate ‘Judge of all the earth‘, and in His righteousness and justice will deal with sin and rebellion, unless man accepts His way of salvation and of dealing with sin that He has provided through Christ, by changing us from the inside out.

These are thorny issues, and no-one has all the answers, but it is worth tussling with the tougher issues from time to time. I wish you all well as you read and pray.

Now bear with me through this first article, which is not the easiest to take in. Take time to study the passages and absorb it if possible….it is revelatory! As you perceive the heart of God for you, it will make a real difference to your walk with Him.

It was birthed out of a recent preaching engagement in Cyprus, where I was preaching on the subject of ‘sonship’, at an indigenous Greek Cypriot church.

I learned a hard but valuable lesson in the process. At one point in the word, I was affirming that the ‘judgment’ of Father God towards His children is always intended to bring them to a place of victory in their lives. He is redemptive in His working.

Matt.12v20-21  20 A bruised reed he will not break, and a smouldering wick he will not snuff out, till he leads justice to victory. 21 In his name the nations will put their hope."

The word translated ‘justice’ in our English versions in the verse above is actually the Greek word for ‘judgment’, not ‘justice’, which is a poorer translation. The context around the verse is of the ministry of God’s beloved (Son) to weakened or bruised people. The kind of ‘judgment’ spoken of here is that which is deeper into the heart of God - not a punishment, but corrective, a judgment which sees the beauty in people, and a design intended to restore this beauty. Hallelujah! Such is the nature of God. He is very interested in the restoration of what we were birthed for.....not just to be a carpenter, or whatever our work, but to become what we were called to be, which has been ruined by sin. It is the time of the ‘restoration of all things’.

2

Christ took our punishment upon Himself at the cross, so God will not ‘punish’ us who are His sons. The church in its prophetic function is an instrument in the Lord’s hands to facilitate the bringing forth of that restoration - cf. Isaiah 61v4:

They will rebuild the ancient ruins and restore the places long devastated; they will renew the ruined cities that have been devastated for generations.

Now, with this in mind, I refer to Hebrews chapter 12 v4-13 with particular attention to verse 6.  The context is of partakers in His holiness, the correction of a Father towards a son He delights in.

There is an awesome adoration in the centre of true fear of the Lord.

Hosea 3v5:  Afterwards the Israelites will return and seek the Lord their God and David their king. They will come trembling to the Lord and to his blessings in the last days.

A correct translation of the underlined portion would be to say, ‘They shall fear the Lord and His goodness...’ It is the revelation of God’s goodness to us, His grace and mercy, His kindness and favour which wins through, wins our hearts, and brings change – cf. Psalms 66 & 67. 66v5 Come and see what God has done, how awesome his works on man's behalf!

The passage I mentioned in Hebrews 12 is based on Proverbs 3v11-12 (NIV):

11 ‘My son, do not despise the Lord's discipline and do not resent his rebuke,

12 because the Lord disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.’

But in translating the original Hebrew scriptures, the Septuagint (the ancient Greek translation of the Jewish scriptures) uses the word ‘punishes’ for ‘discipline’.

When I read out the Hebrews 12 passage out to the Greek Cypriot church from my English bible, the interpreter (who is also the main leader of the church), did not translate verse 6 as ‘punishes’, but ‘chastises’, a less harsh interpretation. He later told me that in the Greek, ‘chastises’ was the intention of the phrase.

As he explained, the word ‘punishes’ implies a punishment given for what has been done, and the implication could be that the work of the cross was not enough.  The word ‘chastises’ lends itself to the understanding of God as Father, correcting with the purpose of a change of behaviour in a son (or daughter) in whom He delights. Tough love can be tender as well. English translations (except the KJV) miss this:

Heb 12:6-7 (NIV)..... the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son."  Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons...

Heb 12:6-7(TRUTH NT)....He disciplines those He loves, and punishes when necessary everyone who He has accepted as His son. So you can regard the various hardships you have to face in a positive way, as discipline.

Heb 12:6-7 (KJV) ......For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.   If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons.....

A more appropriate rendering of this passage, then, would include the word ‘chastises’ instead of the word ‘punishes’. The interpreter also allowed for the word ‘scourges’, but always in a redemptive setting. The Greek mindset would not use the word ‘punishes’.

So, in summary, we learn through this that God is purposeful rather than austere in His judgments. He sees the beauty in people, which He longs to restore, and that they may fulfil God’s purpose for their lives. He sees the beauty in you, which He is working to restore. He sees you not as you are, but as you will be.

Samuel, with the eyes of the Lord, saw David as a king. Jesus saw Peter - the rock - in Simon. God used Daniel to restore to Nebuchadnezzar the purpose he was to fulfil, which he had forgotten. The prophetic affirms what is already there, a planting of the Lord, in our hearts.

I enjoyed my discussion with Panayotis, a real friend and brother in Cyprus, following the service, and the ensuing research. I hope it is of value to you, also.

2. Hope and a Future

As we focus on the positive, hope is given the ground in which to grow. God is restoring His Church. I remember when we used to hold days of prayer and fasting to encourage the practice of fasting as well as to pray together in the locality. But now, fasting is much more the norm, with many churches encouraging the practice, along with prayer. Worship, too, is reaching new heights.

Believers are being encouraged to live in the realm of His presence, and are having dreams and visions, and as unbelievers are drawn into their lives and the life of the Church, they begin to see what God created them to be.

3

God is also raising up champions. Purity is being championed. God is restoring fiery believers and the radical pioneering spirit. As new moves of God sweep into the life of the Church, there will be mess and disturbance, as the rubbish is pared from the good. A birth, and a newborn child is messy, but rather that than no birth at all. Life is brought forth amid the mess. May God grant us new things as well as old.

Matt13v52:  He said to them, "Therefore every teacher of the law who has been instructed about the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house who brings out of his storeroom new treasures as well as old."

Don’t be left behind. Some are taking on Daniel fasts for 6 months…no meats, sweets, etc.  Jeremiah 6v16 encourages us to stand and look, and to take the paths of righteousness. Tried and tested ways in God, according to His word. Taste and see that the Lord is good. Eat and drink of Him…John 6. God is on the move. He is preparing His Church for the End Days. Guess what - we win! His Church will triumph. He has no intention of coming for a weak and watery bride, but a strong, vibrant bride, full of life, full of love for Him, triumphing over adversity and demonstrating His kingdom power and authority. Many unbelievers will come to Him because of the radiance of His Church. Don’t be left behind.

Prophecy often has several fulfillments, the nearer and the farther. For instance, before Jesus' first coming, it was prophesied that the 'Spirit of Elijah', (manifest in John the Baptist) would come to restoie people's spiritual interest in the Messiah and to prepare the way for His coming.

Matt 17v10-13:   The disciples asked him, "Why then do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?" 11 Jesus replied, "To be sure, Elijah comes and will restore all things. 12 But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they did not recognise him, but have done to him everything they wished. In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands." 13 Then the disciples understood that he was talking to them about John the Baptist.

In the further fulfillment of this prophecy, before Jesus' second coming, likewise the 'Spirit of Elijah' will restore the Church and also the interest of ordinary people in the Messiah, Jesus, preparing the way for His coming again.  There is tremendous hope for the Church, and indeed the nations, as many people come to the realisation that life is hopeless and without a future and without meaning. As they turn to the Lord, He gives them a ‘future and a hope.

Jeremiah 29v11-14:    “…I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.  You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.  I will be found by you," declares the Lord…

3. A Five Year Window of Opportunity for our Nation.

The Family Matters Institute say they hope and pray that this Government will honour its pledge to put family and social justice at the heart of policy and thinking, having had hits over working family tax credits. Generally, the support of marriage and family seems to be back on the agenda. The vision of a ‘Big Society’ has increased the opportunities and focus for churches and voluntary groups in their service to local communities.

The Government has 45 Christian MP’s on its benches. Our own local MP gives us ready access and is Minister for the Cabinet Office, responsible for shaping and implementing government policy. I have written to our Prime Minister, Foreign Secretary and local MP over the need to honour God in the way of governing, with encouraging replies and an invitation.

Now see the passage below that the Lord gave to my wife and I whilst praying in the ‘Government Gate’ time slot at the church 24/7 prayer room. We began by a half hour of worship, and then were led to this bible passage. As we read it, the whole passage began to open up with real relevance to the present government. See what you think.

It is 2 Chronicles chapter 15 - Asa's Reform. (Asa was King of Judah.) Think of this in terms of our Prime Minister and Cabinet. What lessons could you draw from this passage which would apply to our own government?

1 The Spirit of God came upon Azariah son of Oded. 2 He went out to meet Asa and said to him, "Listen to me, Asa and all Judah and Benjamin. The Lord is with you when you are with him. If you seek him, he will be found by you, but if you forsake him, he will forsake you.

For a long time Israel was without the true God, without a priest to teach and without the law. 4 But in their distress they turned to the Lord, the God of Israel, and sought him, and he was found by them.

5 In those days it was not safe to travel about, for all the inhabitants of the lands were in great turmoil. 6 One nation was being crushed by another and one city by another, because God was troubling them with every kind of distress.

4

But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded." 8 When Asa heard these words and the prophecy of Azariah son of Oded the prophet, he took courage. He removed the detestable idols from the whole land of Judah and Benjamin and from the towns he had captured in the hills of Ephraim. He repaired the altar of the Lord that was in front of the portico of the Lord's temple.

9 Then he assembled all Judah and Benjamin and the people from Ephraim, Manasseh and Simeon who had settled among them, for large numbers had come over to him from Israel when they saw that the Lord his God was with him.

10 They assembled at Jerusalem in the third month of the fifteenth year of Asa's reign. 11 At that time they sacrificed to the Lord seven hundred head of cattle and seven thousand sheep and goats from the plunder they had brought back.

12 They entered into a covenant to seek the Lord, the God of their fathers, with all their heart and soul. 13 All who would not seek the Lord, the God of Israel, were to be put to death, whether small or great, man or woman. 14 They took an oath to the Lord with loud acclamation, with shouting and with trumpets and horns. 15 All Judah rejoiced about the oath because they had sworn it wholeheartedly. They sought God eagerly, and he was found by them. So the Lord gave them rest on every side.

16 King Asa also deposed his grandmother Maacah from her position as queen mother, because she had made a repulsive Asherah pole. Asa cut the pole down, broke it up and burned it in the Kidron Valley. 17 Although he did not remove the high places from Israel, Asa's heart was fully committed to the Lord all his life. 18 He brought into the temple of God the silver and gold and the articles that he and his father had dedicated. 19 There was no more war until the thirty-fifth year of Asa's reign.

Pray for God to raise up prophetic and contemporary voices who could speak into our government and interpret such passages to its leaders. Also, Isaiah chapter 10v1-2  expresses God’s concern over government and lawmakers:

Woe to those who make unjust laws, to those who issue oppressive decrees, to deprive the poor of their rights and withhold justice from the oppressed of my people.

Nationally, we are pleased that the present Government seems to be more open and honest, without ‘spin‘, and are trying to do the right thing over Britain’s debt problems….inherited from the previous government.

Jackie and I spent time with our local MP Francis Maude recently, who is now high up in the present Government. We encouraged him over issues of justice and mercy as well as other matters. I will be meeting with him in the New Year over issues to do with Israel and the Middle East.

We need to pray that the Prime Minister, David Cameron, and the Foreign Secretary, William Hague both be guided towards justice, righteousness and godliness, and for a right understanding of what God is doing in Israel. Other members of the Cabinet should be included in this prayer too.

The previous government’s demands for sex education to be compulsory for all Primary school children, could still be on the agenda. In some quarters there is a push for full homosexual marriage. More positively, the Government has set aside plans for Roman Catholics to accede to the throne, is calling time on 24 hour drinking, and, as we know, is looking seriously at the tax and benefits system to catch up with the fraudsters and the lazy. May that particular issue be dealt with in justice and yet mercy, wisdom and effectiveness, so that the truly needy are not penalized. It is also good that the Prime Minister recognises the value of the Churches in our nation in meeting many community needs, and supports Sunday School teachers.  Keep in prayer for our Government and nation…there is hope!

4. Basic biblical teaching about Israel

Why is there always such a political furore, decade after decade, regarding Israel?  Many of you are familiar with teachings about Israel, but for those of you who do not know too much about God’s heart and attitude towards Israel and the Jews, I have included this article.

Firstly, God has stated in the Bible that He has placed Israel at the centre of the world, with the nations around her. (Ezekiel 5v5)  This centrality is spiritual as well as physical and political, hence the interest of world religions over Jerusalem. After all, Jesus said he would return to Jerusalem in the End days! The enemy also knows that Israel and Jerusalem are keys to his future, hence his activity to thwart God‘s plan and timing. He is mortally afraid!

Isaiah 46v9-13   9 Remember the former things, those of long ago; I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me. 10 I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say: My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please.11 From the east I summon a bird of prey; from a far-off land, a man to fulfil my purpose. What I have said, that will I bring about; what I have planned, that will I do.

12 Listen to me, you stubborn-hearted, you who are far from righteousness. 13 I am bringing my righteousness near, it is not far away; and my salvation will not be delayed. I will grant salvation to Zion, my splendour to Israel.

God has a purpose for Israel – to grant salvation to this nation - a nation unique to God. From the passages below we learn that in God’s view, He is the ‘God of Israel’, ‘the God of the Hebrews‘, Israel is the ‘foremost of the nations’, Israel is ‘not being reckoned amongst the nations’, and is regarded as ’Your very own forever’. In other words, God has chosen Israel for a purpose, unlike any other nation.

Exodus 5:1-3  Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, "This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: 'Let my people go, so that they may hold a festival to me in the desert.' " Pharaoh said, "Who is the Lord, that I should obey him and let Israel go? I do not know the Lord and I will not let Israel go." Then they said, "The God of the Hebrews has met with us.

Jer 31:7  This is what the Lord says:  "Sing with joy for Jacob; shout for the foremost of the nations. Make your praises heard, and say, 'O Lord, save your people, the remnant of Israel.'

Numbers 23v7-9 (KJV) (Balaam:)    ‘Balak the king of Moab hath brought me from Aram, out of the mountains of the east, saying, Come, curse me Jacob, and come, defy Israel. How shall I curse, whom God hath not cursed? or how shall I defy, whom the Lord hath not defied?  For from the top of the rocks I see him, and from the hills I behold him: lo, the people shall dwell alone, and shall not be reckoned among the nations.

2 Sam 7v23-26: .  .... who is like your people Israel—the one nation on earth that God went out to redeem as a people for himself, and to make a name for himself, and to perform great and awesome wonders by driving out nations and their gods from before your people, whom you redeemed from Egypt? You have established your people Israel as your very own forever, and you, O Lord, have become their God. "And now, Lord God, keep forever the promise you have made concerning your servant and his house. Do as you promised, so that your name will be great for ever. Then men will say, 'The Lord Almighty is God over Israel!'

This last passage is in the context of David wishing to establish a temple for God in which to dwell. Although his son, Solomon had the temple built, God’s ultimate plan was to create a different type of ‘temple’...a living temple made up of people, who would worship and honour Him, through His Son, Jesus.

But the Jews by and large did not recognise Jesus, their Messiah when He came......as prophesied. As a result, there followed a 2000 year exile of Jews throughout the nations - the ‘Diaspora’. Through Israel’s rejection of their Messiah, God’s plan was to bring in the Gentile nations first, and then finally His ancient people Israel, so that both Jew & Gentile would be together in the ‘House of God’...His body, the Church.

Replacement Theology (Fulfillment Theology) teaches correctly that Abraham was the father of all who believe…pointing to Christian believers. Paul, in chapters 9 & 10 of the book of Romans, makes a good case for Christians inheriting the good things of God, and being His people, by faith in Christ and His promises, and thus the people of God throughout all the nations. However, Romans 11 goes on to speak of the restoration of the nation of Israel to God, to join with the Church in being the ’One New Man’ in Christ, (Ephesians 2) as the nation of Israel finally turns to God and discovers their Messiah is ’Yeshua’, the Lord of the Church & Saviour of the world.

Romans 11  25 I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers, so that you may not be conceited: Israel has experienced a hardening in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in. 26 And so all Israel will be saved......28 As far as the gospel is concerned, they are enemies on your account; but as far as election is concerned, they are loved on account of the patriarchs, 29 for God's gifts and his call are irrevocable.

Historically, there has been a Jewish presence in the physical land of Israel (even though Israel did not figure on maps) throughout those centuries of the Diaspora. At the end of the 19th Century, the Zionist Movement emerged, calling for, envisioning for and preparing the way for a return of Jewish people scattered around the world, to their original homeland. The Balfour Declaration and the League of Nations ‘Palestine Mandate’ of 1917 & 1922 gave further opportunity for Jewish people to return to the land. They returned as pioneer farmers and settlers. However, serious opposition to the ‘return’ in Britain and elsewhere also hindered progress. It took the Holocaust of World War 2, involving the slaughter of millions of Jews by Nazi Germany, to bring the nations to an agreement to recognise the right of the Jews to their own land, so in 1948 the United Nations ratified this, recognising the sovereign state of Israel.

Things were still difficult, because Israel was surrounded by enemies who immediately tried to wipe out the birthing nation. But God had other plans, and these enemies were defeated - against huge odds! Later, in 1967, the ‘Six day war‘ took place, a miraculous event, where Israel, despite once again being surrounded by enemies attacking her, achieved great victory and in fact, finally took possession of Jerusalem.

Since then, there has been increasing alienation amongst the nations. Israel has become a political ‘thorn’ in the Middle East. Many nations have oil interests in the Middle East, and are seeking to appease Arab & Muslim nations, and often favouring them over Israel. There is no political solution for Israel, and that is in God‘s plan. Some nations do not acknowledge her right to exist as a nation, and some want to destroy her completely….Iran has declared this openly.

God’s plan for Israel is that the Jews should once again, as in bible days, look to the God of Israel for His solution, and His peace…ultimately only found in Christ.

6

The last decade saw a strong increase in ‘Aliyah’, that is, the return of Jews from other nations, to live in Israel. Russian Jews, Ethiopian Jews, Jews from most parts of the compass returned in larger numbers. This aliyah was predicted in the Bible, at a further time in the future, rather than the specific return from Babylonian exile:

Isaiah 11:11-12  ....the Lord will reach out his hand a second time to reclaim the remnant that is left of his people... ‘He will raise a banner for the nations and gather the exiles of Israel; he will assemble the scattered people of Judah from the four quarters of the earth.’

Is. 14v1-2: The Lord will have compassion on Jacob; once again he will choose Israel and will settle them in their own land. Aliens (lit: ‘Strangers’) will join them and unite with the house of Jacob. Nations will take them and bring them to their own place.

Jer 31:7-11  7 This is what the Lord says:   "Sing with joy for Jacob; shout for the foremost of the nations. Make your praises heard, and say, 'O Lord, save your people, the remnant of Israel.' 8 See, I will bring them from the land of the north and gather them from the ends of the earth. Among them will be the blind and the lame, expectant mothers and women in labour; a great throng will return. 9 They will come with weeping; they will pray as I bring them back. I will lead them beside streams of water on a level path where they will not stumble, because I am Israel's father, and Ephraim is my firstborn son.

10 "Hear the word of the Lord, O nations; proclaim it in distant coastlands: 'He who scattered Israel will gather them and will watch over his flock like a shepherd.' 11 For the Lord will ransom Jacob and redeem them from the hand of those stronger than they.

It is interesting to note that our prophetic preparation in Cyprus to help the Jews return safely to Israel from western continents in times to come, is now being mirrored by a major Christian organisation in Israel. Isaiah 43v5: Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bring your children from the east and gather you from the west...

Christian Friends of Israel run a distribution centre in Jerusalem providing basic necessities for Jews who have been making ’aliyah’, returning to their roots in Israel, from mainly the northern, eastern and southern continents. However, CFI is in prayer and seeking the Lord for a vision that will fit the ‘new aliyah’ from  western countries, like Canada, USA and Europe.  “Those returning from the more developed countries will be asking for more than just used clothing, etc…… the next era of aliyah will break onto the scene in the coming days.”    ([Ed.] This fits in well with what we believe the Lord has been leading us to declare and prepare both in GB and Cyprus.

Meanwhile, within Israel, over the last 50 years, Messianic fellowships of Jewish believers in Messiah have emerged, grown, and multiplied. Though there were only a handful at one time, there are now over 100 Messianic fellowships  and over 15000 Jewish believers in Israel, as well as many Arab believers and Christians from other nations. More recently, reconciliation between Palestinian Arab believers in Israel and Jewish believers has been taking place. Forgiveness and love toward one another has come forth, demonstrating that true and lasting peace in the Middle East can only be established in Christ:

Eph 2  14 For he himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility.....His purpose was to create in himself one new man out of the two, thus making peace.... 19 Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow-citizens with God's people and members of God's household, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. 21 In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord.

Our own church, Kingdom Faith Church, has recently put on a national conference about the reconciliation between Jews and Palestinians, which has captured the interest of many, including a political element…after all, many are asking how peace and reconciliation can be possible in the Middle East. The speakers were a Jewish pastor and an Arab pastor and we heard how God was breaking down the walls of hatred and suspicion between the two communities. (I will be giving greater detail of this in the winter edition.)

But what of the end? Where is all this focus on Israel leading? What about the nations in relation to Israel?  Simply put, it is that God is a God who keeps His promises, a faithful God who keeps His covenant with Israel…as He does with the Church. It is about His character. He will bring the End Times events to pass, according to His word. He is the Sovereign Lord…to Him be the glory!

From Zechariah 12 & 13:  12v1This is the word of the Lord concerning Israel. The Lord, who stretches out the heavens, who lays the foundation of the earth, and who forms the spirit of man within him, declares: 2 "I am going to make Jerusalem a cup that sends all the surrounding peoples reeling. Judah will be besieged as well as Jerusalem. 11

3 On that day, when all the nations of the earth are gathered against her, I will make Jerusalem an immovable rock for all the nations. 9 On that day I will set out to destroy all the nations that attack Jerusalem. 10 "And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him...13v1 "On that day a fountain will be opened to the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and impurity. They will call on my name and I will answer them; I will say, 'They are my people,' and they will say, 'The Lord is our God.' "

5. Israel & International issues

a. Protection & Deception: The borders of Israel are vulnerable, since the nation is surrounded by enemies. The body of Messiah in the region, both Messianic Jews and Arabs also need protection, as they stand for truth in the midst of lies. Speaking of lies, Reuters is under fire for photos giving a wrong impression of events in the first Gaza flotilla. The picture of a knife held by a passenger over the wounded IDF (Israeli Defence Force) soldier was cropped. Video footage has also shown flotilla participants beating IDF soldiers with metal bars. (Indy Post & ITLD News). This was not the perspective the international media put out at the time, in outrage against Israel over the incident aboard the Mavi Marmara. Furthermore, Turkey was involved at the highest level in the enlisting, grooming and support of violent activists prepared for conflict who were planted aboard the ship.

Hamas were also aboard, their leader having stated earlier in the year that he was preparing a confrontation with Israeli forces. This is another indication that it was a planned attempt to provoke Israel, and capture international attention, which would result in further bias against Israel. Unfortunately, David Cameron appeared only to hear one side of the argument in his pronouncements over the flotilla, and against Israel, taking the previous governments line in condemning Israel (for defending themselves!) Has he forgotten how many times Britain did the same thing to stop IRA gun running?

On August 3rd, the Lebanese Armed Forces  (LAF) fired at an Israeli Defence Force position near the Lebanese border, west of the internationally recognised 'Blue Line' and east of the security fence. Thus, the IDF were in Israeli territory, and doing routine maintenance work, pre-coordinated with UNIFIL. Death, and wounded Israeli soldiers was the result. Yet despite the Israeli Prime Minister and Defence Minister calling for international condemnation of this, there has been no outcry such as with the flotilla. May the truth continue to emerge, exposing deception, even though the damage is done, to a large extent.

However, Tony Blair in his role as envoy to the Middle East for the ‘Quartet’, has spoken against the de-legitimisation of Israel amongst the nations, identifying both overt denial of Israels right to exist by some nations, and the prejudice in many other nations against listening to Israel's point of view, and allowing for her legitimate security concerns. After all, which other nation would not have security concerns if it were surrounded by hostile nations? Well done, Tony! It has also been recognised that Israel was at the forefront of giving practical medical and other forms of aid to the people of Haiti.

Perhaps the most damaging evergreen issue concerning nations of the world regarding the Jews and Israel is that of the land. Jews have maintained some presence in the land of Israel for 2000 years since the second exile following the fall of Jerusalem (66-70 AD). The world cannot understand Gods promise to the Jews when He designated the land to be their homeland in his covenant with Abraham. God gave the Jews this land.

Gen 12:4-7   4 So Abram left, as the Lord had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Haran. 5 He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Haran, and they set out for the land of Canaan, and they arrived there. 6 Abram travelled through the land as far as the site of the great tree of Moreh at Shechem. At that time the Canaanites were in the land. 7 The Lord appeared to Abram and said, "To your offspring I will give this land." So he built an altar there to the Lord, who had appeared to him.

Gen 15:5-7 He took him outside and said, "Look up at the heavens and count the stars—if indeed you can count them." Then he said to him, "So shall your offspring be." 6 Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness. 7 He also said to him, "I am the Lord, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to take possession of it."

Since the restoration of the state of Israel in 1948 - agreed and established by the United Nations - the surrounding nations have used the Palestinians as political pawns to use against Israel, especially the refugee encampment at Gaza. Though these nations have huge amounts of land, they have not made provision for the Palestinians, but the Jews have sought to accommodate Palestinian Arabs, and have provided health care and many other benefits. Many Palestinian Arabs prefer living under Jewish rule because they receive provision and good health care, whereas under their own governments, they receive neither.

The ‘Refugee Status’ of the Palestinians stirs up intense sentiments. The entire Gaza population is under this status, even though a considerable portion live in fabulous luxury! The United Nations redefinition of ’Refugee Status’ denies hundreds of thousands of Jewish refugees from Arab lands any recourse or repatriation to their homelands, or adequate compensation for the loss of property. Yet the Palestinians are deemed worthy and qualified to pass their designation as refugees to generations who never lived in the land! Could it be that Oil and Mammon play a part in this UN thinking?

The ‘Mandate for Palestine‘, the League of Nations document formulated in 1922, gave Jews the legal right to settle anywhere in Western Palestine between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean.

This remains international law! Arab rights to self determination in Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, and later, Trans-Jordan, were also granted in the document. The Jews took this up, but the Palestinian Arabs were never fully allowed to take this up in order to settle in the four surrounding nations. Hence the view ’political pawns’. It is good, sometimes, to look at the foundational truths of a situation, rather than just the current situation.

Pray that the nations appreciate Israel’s dilemma. Recognise that God is in ultimate control and has already revealed in the Scriptures what will happen, and pray that Israel’s leaders will act with wisdom - particularly in military matters.

6. Unusual 2010 ‘Signs’

A biblical ‘sign’ is an event which captures the attention of the nations of the world, but has a spiritual message or significance to it.  There have been a number of events this year alone which have fulfilled this condition. Some were physical signs, some spiritual or religious, some simply attracting huge media attention.

Natural ‘signs’

January -  the Earthquake and devastating Tsunami and huge loss of life in Haiti.

March -  the Icelandic Ash Cloud, resulting in the grounding of all air flights in the cloud area for a season.

April -  the Gulf of Mexico oil rupture resulting in an uncapped flow of oil from the sea bed and devastation of seashores.

August -  the Pakistan flooding, resulting in huge areas of devastation and loss of homes and livelihood.

What is the ‘sign’? There is an acceleration of physical and natural events which will lead to the return of Christ. These are warnings and pointers. The interval between events such as this are shortening, no longer in years, but in months! Jesus warned people to heed the signs of the times and recognise God as God, and get right with Him. See Matthew chapter 24, Mark 13, Luke 21. Also see below:

Isaiah 24: The LORD's Devastation of the Earth

1 See, the Lord is going to lay waste the earth and devastate it; he will ruin its face and scatter its inhabitants— 2 it will be the same for priest as for people, for master as for servant, for mistress as for maid, for seller as for buyer, for borrower as for lender, for debtor as for creditor. 3 The earth will be completely laid waste and totally plundered. The Lord has spoken this word.

4 The earth dries up and withers, the world languishes and withers, the exalted of the earth languish. 5 The earth is defiled by its people; they have disobeyed the laws, violated the statutes and broken the everlasting covenant. 6 Therefore a curse consumes the earth; its people must bear their guilt. ....... 11 all joy turns to gloom, all gaiety is banished from the earth...... 17 Terror and pit and snare await you, O people of the earth. 18 Whoever flees at the sound of terror will fall into a pit; whoever climbs out of the pit will be caught in a snare.

The floodgates of the heavens are opened, the foundations of the earth shake. 19 The earth is broken up, the earth is split asunder, the earth is thoroughly shaken. 20 The earth reels like a drunkard, it sways like a hut in the wind; so heavy upon it is the guilt of its rebellion that it falls—never to rise again.

21 In that day the Lord will punish the powers in the heavens above and the kings on the earth below. 22 They will be herded together like prisoners bound in a dungeon; they will be shut up in prison and be punished after many days. 23 The moon will be abashed, the sun ashamed; for the Lord Almighty will reign on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, and before its elders, gloriously.

Isaiah 26:  9..When your judgments come upon the earth, the people of the world learn righteousness..21 See, the Lord is coming out of his dwelling to punish the people of the earth for their sins. The earth will disclose the blood shed upon her; she will conceal her slain no longer.

Event ‘signs’

May –The Israeli raid on the Gaza Flotilla, bringing relief supplies to Gaza under blockade, and the following international condemnation of Israel, despite the fact that terrorists were using the flotilla as cover, and that Gaza has been firing hundreds of rockets into Israel. Huge media coverage.

September – the threat of the public burning of 200 Korans in protest at the Muslim Centre planned to be built near the site of 9/11 in the USA. Huge media coverage..

September – The Pope’s visit to Britain. Are Catholic v Protestant boundaries blurring? * Huge coverage. Then the mining disaster and rescue of miners...who prayed and many converted to Christ whilst down in the mine. Huge media coverage.

So what is the ‘sign’ in all these? There is not only an acceleration of natural ‘signs’ but also of religious or spiritual ‘signs’ pointing to and leading to the return of Christ, Israel being central to His return. Biblically, the nations of the earth will oppose Israel, particularly over the issue of Jerusalem. Ultimately, they will unite and gather at the plain of Megiddo in northern Israel (Armageddon) to destroy Israel.

Islam seeks world religious domination and opposes Christianity and Judaism, Catholicism seeks a re-emergence of world influence, after the child sex scandals. There is a growing desire for the religions of the world to unite, except that true Christianity and also Judaism will refuse to do this, as we worship the God of Abraham alone. Tony Blair is currently holding the baton for this vision of the religions of the world to unite. The Pope is in favour. Biblically, there will be the development of a one world religious system (the false prophet), in support of a one world ruler (the Antichrist) who will want to be worshipped as God in Jerusalem. The stage is being set in our day!  See Revelation chapters 7, 12, & 13 and also below:

Luke 21:20-28    20 "When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies, you will know that its desolation is near. 21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the country not enter the city. 22 For this is the time of punishment in fulfilment of all that has been written. 23 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! There will be great distress in the land and wrath against this people. 24 They will fall by the sword and taken as  prisoners to all the nations.

Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled. 25 "There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. 26 Men will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. 27 At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near."

Revelation 16v12-20    12 The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up to prepare the way for the kings from the East. 13 Then I saw three evil spirits that looked like frogs; they came out of the mouth of the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast and out of the mouth of the false prophet. 14 They are spirits of demons performing miraculous signs, and they go out to the kings of the whole world, to gather them for the battle on the great day of God Almighty. 15 "Behold, I come like a thief! Blessed is he who stays awake and keeps his clothes with him, so that he may not go naked and be shamefully exposed."

16 Then they gathered the kings together to the place that in Hebrew is called Armageddon. 17 The seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air, and out of the temple came a loud voice from the throne, saying, "It is done!" 18 Then there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder and a severe earthquake. No earthquake like it has ever occurred since man has been on earth, so tremendous was the quake. 19 The great city split into three parts, and the cities of the nations collapsed. God remembered Babylon the Great and gave her the cup filled with the wine of the fury of his wrath. 20 Every island fled away and the mountains could not be found. 21 From the sky huge hailstones of about a hundred pounds each fell upon men. And they cursed God on account of the plague of hail, because the plague was so terrible.

Revelation 19:20    20 ....But the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who had performed the miraculous signs on his behalf. With these signs he had deluded those who had received the mark of the beast and worshipped his image. The two of them were thrown alive into the fiery lake of burning sulphur.

*  NB...Catholicism. (see page 14, ‘Event signs’). The Catholic child sex scandal is rooted in the Catholic Church’s refusal to allow priests to marry, which is unbiblical. ‘Saints’ biblically are all the true believers in Christ, not people venerated and made ‘saints’ by the Catholic Church.

Mary is given a place in the Catholic Church far above the place scripture gives her...even to the point of worship of Mary in some cases. Catholicism is a Religion of works, encouraging the earning of salvation by works, including indulgences, etc. Martin Luther strongly opposed this religion of works, and promoted the biblical truth of being saved buy faith in the name of Jesus Christ alone, with no works needed. This ‘protest’ against Catholicism marked the beginning of the Protestant Church, at the cost of many lives.

7. Family

As always, I include a section about us. We appreciate your love, friendship, prayers, emails, letters, calls, texts, and financial support over the years. We are happy with plenty to do. We have visited Cyprus recently - three times this year. The networking and prayer movement grows, with a ‘House of Prayer now opened.

You will remember the concern we believe God revealed to us during our last parliamentary visit, for ‘Justice to be seen to be done’. (See our website for full details & video: http://www.hatikvah1.org/  the ‘Parliament - Justice’ page.) Since then, the Lord has earthed this in us by giving both my wife and I a personal and practical opportunity to feel this concern in both our workplaces. Mine is a bonus issue for the workers, my wife's a discount issue for staff. Both need justice to be done, and seen to be done.

She is still working through the menopause stage, but helping others through this, too. I am proud of her as she is also willing to take more of a lead in spiritual meetings.

As for me (David), a short story: Went to buy a replacement fire extinguisher in a town in Cyprus for ‘Hatikvah House’. It cost nearly 40 euros in the shop. ‘Too much, and not the same type’, I thought. I tried elsewhere with the same result. Then the Voice: ‘Go to the motor accessory shop.’ I know that Voice….the Lord’s. ‘But they only do the little ones, Lord.’ But I went, and there was exactly the right replacement for only 10 euros! God cares about the little things in our lives. He is also an economist!  God bless you and yours this Christma
